Princeton FAQ: Get your questions answered by current students

Hi, I was wondering what the social life is like at Princeton. Of course I would be interested in the university either way, but would just like some insight on what Princeton life is really like.

@jchick - Iā€™m not sure what you mean. A social science major is free to mostly ignore math/science, true. Iā€™m not sure if your characterization is accurate though, because youā€™re free to have a ā€œbalancedā€ education regardless of what major you pickā€¦you just have to take the classes that YOU want to take. Princeton really does allow you a lot of leeway in shaping your schedule. It is true that a math/science person canā€™t get away without some humanities, though.

I have seen Princetonā€™s supplement, and I am aware that it asks you to choose whether you would be applying for Engineering or Liberal Arts. I am confident that I want to be a computer science major but am unsure as to whether I would prefer to pursue this field from an Engineering or Liberal Arts perspective. Is it possible to switch this selection early in a Princeton career, if I realize I made the ā€œwrongā€ choice?

Yep, itā€™s super easy to switch between BSE and AB. For computer science, which one you do basically just depends on which requirements you find less annoying.

Thank you! Iā€™ll apply AB then  (my resume is more suited towards it and I honestly donā€™t know)

I have a question. By what date are candidates asked for an interview at Princeton? I know it can be any time between end of december till end of march, but what is the preferred month for interviews, generally speaking?

Hey guys, im new to CC.
well, my question is simple. Does Princeton take a closer look at students who are able to bring in diversity? I was born in Pakistan but have lived in Singapore for the past 13 years. Im a citizen of Singapore, yet I went to volunteer Pakistan for two months in the summer (Gave seminars in Baloch and went to schools under taliban control and tought them that the education is the right path etc.)
I have the usual good grades and stuff (2300 SAT plus all the APā€™s I could possibly handle and have a 4.1 GPA.) I also participated in an Internship at EMC corporation and have my own business in which i make and sell computers.
So far, my essay topics are how Iā€™m known as a banana and chocolate at school and the difference between the three countries I have lived in (Singapore, Pakistan and USA).
The other topic is my volunteering in Pakistan and the problems that I saw in Balochistan and how I felt this connection with the students to whom I gave seminars.
How I nearly escaped from the hardest and life-altering exam in singapore (PSLE) administerd to 6th graders and how I came here just in time to miss it, though I had full preperation for it.
My business and how it changed me.

Thanks a lot guys. Any input from you Princetonians would absolutely be welcome (BTW princeton is my first choice as I live in NJ)

In the last two posts today you said you had a 2275 on the SAT. Now it is a 2300? lol

I was tiredā€¦ Sorry ā€¦ 2275 is the right answerā€¦ Now could you address my question?

Iā€™m a sophomore in high school how much attention do you give to small slip-ups in grades before junior and senior year?

@hassaniman itā€™s impossible to get a 2275 in the sat.

SORRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYā€¦ Iā€™m a frisking loserā€¦ I checked colllegeboard website again and noticed I had 2280ā€¦ If you want I could post a picture of it coz Iā€™m not lyingā€¦ Again guys, that was the first time I took the test do I didnt know that a person only got score in multiples of tenā€¦ In any case, my score is 2800 ā€¦ **** myselfā€¦ SORRYTTTT.

Could you guys chance me now??? Iā€™m sorry for having wasted your time.

A 2800 is definitely, definitely impossible haha. 2280 less so.

WHAT THE ****ā€¦ I had a 2280, not a 2800 I hate my iPod!!!

Curious to know, tiger14, are you a AB or BSE COS major?

1) For engineering, what calculator do you see most students use? Does it change based on department?
2) Do you guys know of any athletes in engineering? Obviously it is a tough load and putting more fuel in the fire of stress, but any comments?

Thanks so much for your responses so far!

@shannonhadley: Iā€™m a BSE COS major. :)

1) I see mostly TI-84s, but I donā€™t think it really matters. Some people have TI-89s but not many.

2) I definitely know some athletes in engineering, though Iā€™m not particularly close to any. I think that being any major and being an athlete seems tough ā€“ you are, after all, devoting a ton of time to it. From what Iā€™ve seen, engineering + a sport is difficult, but doable. But Iā€™m really not an expert.

How much do interviews count in the selection process? Like lets say a hypothetical case where a candidate is qualified for admission and has pretty good essays AND also has a stellar interviewā€¦ What would you predict is the outcome likely to be then for a place like Princeton?

A quick query-
Does the Princeton Application Status Tracker signify that your application is complete BEFORE you have submitted your mid-year report? :S

I have this doubt cuz Iā€™m a gap year studentā€¦and I thought that requirement was waived for me until the admissions office requested my expected A-level grades from my ex-schoolā€™s counselorā€¦

Thanks in advance, folks =D

Holla if you hear me! LOL XD

Does Princeton accept credit from college classes taken while youā€™re still in high school, or do they only take AP credit?

Iā€™m pretty sure they only take AP credit, but I just wanted to make sure.
