New College of Florida (Sarasota, Fla)
New College is not your typical public school. The tiny student body allows admissions officers to review each application carefully. Once in, students enjoy "self-directed learning" while being held to "high academic standards." Students don’t seem to mind, though, calling the academic experience "undeniably awesome." This might be in response to receiving "narrative evaluations instead of grades. These evaluations give advice and help us to become better students," and it forces students to "fully participate."
