How credible is the list of schools provided by such programs as the Princeton Review? Is there something better?

Terrible. Don't trust Counselor-O-Matic. Perusing a college guide with the SAT and class rank breakdowns, along with descriptions, such as PR's own guide, is much more helpful.

I'm not recommending that you use the USNWR listings to pick schools, but they do provide a list of colleges in approximate order by how hard they are to get into. I would use the USNWR list to find names and then look the names up in a college guide. The Princeton Review Top 357 Colleges and the Fiske Guide to Colleges are both good guides.
