Sorry to be harsh, but Ivy Leagues have become hard left breeding grounds and incubators for bad thinking. A victim of groupthink. Anyone can see this, unless of course you go or went there. I already know the responses I will receive to this post, but the left is the LEAST tolerant when it comes to any type of freedoms. The record speaks for itself. People with this form of “thinking” imagine a world, a Utopia, that would exist if we could just FORCE everyone to live OUR way and think like US. In other words, NO freedom. And the Right, BTW, is the same. Neither would understand true freedom (nor embrace it), if it hit them over the head with a 2x4. I support these students in their right to express their views. And if timid college administrators want to resign and apologize for things they didn’t do, then that’s their choice. Fine. But shame on us if we give into demands for forced “sensitivity training” or firing professors who have unpopular views, or if we allow the coercing of administrators to ban speakers some group doesn’t like from speaking on campus. That is the wrong path. Freedom, true freedom, comes with some unpleasantries. So does truth. But you have to tolerate the bad to enjoy the good. The alternative is Tyranny. Which do we prefer?
My middle daughter works at a Fortune 500 company. While at a corporate event, a co-worker mentioned his brother was attending a tailgate at a Mizzou game. She innocently asked, “Will the protestors be there?” A black co-worker overheard this statement and reported her to a manager.
This young black woman didn’t know that my daughter’s two college roommates are black and the Black Alliance held their meetings in their living quarters for four years. Her roommates are now in Charleston, SC working on the front lines of the conflict there. They call each other often as they are all best friends.
My daughter was devastated that someone would assume she’s racist. She called me crying after work. I said, “I’m so sorry that your co-worker feels so marginalized by society to assume that the blonde girl next to her is a racist. Please forgive her and only talk about the weather from now on.”
To quote the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of OZ, “What a world, what a world!”
Do you think it’s going to rain?
Instead of forgiving the accuser, perhaps she should file a complaint against the accuser instead for making a false accusation. The accuser should be put on notice that this behavior will not be tolerated.
Some people are so quick to yell “Racism!” when none exists. It just happened at Vanderbilt as well. There was a bag of dog feces placed outside the Black Cultural Center. Some students called the Vanderbilt police department to report a Hate Crime!
It turns out that the bag was placed there by a blind student who was at the Black Cultural Center for a group project. When her dog had to “do its business”, she placed the bag near a door, as she was trained to do, so that somebody who could see a trash can would throw it away.

For many of those who cry racism at a moment’s notice, often the nearest racist is the one in the mirror.
ashteacher…your daughter does not need to prove she is not a racist, and feel guilty. she should file a complaint against the other woman. ask for justification of the false claim. not explain how it is false.(push back hard and do not play the game the way it has been set up) it is a saul alinsky tactic if she plays that game she will lose. (yes I am sure the co worker does not know who saul alinsky was)
but when you have to stop what you are doing and start the…but I am not a racist here is my proof…you have played the game gone of defense and lost.
this statement is not relevant and makes her look weak an “guilty”
it reads I am not a racist some of my nest friend are …(fill in the blank)

@hebegebe
She won’t do that. For four years she witnessed firsthand her roommates’ lives and understands intimately some of the issues brought up daily in the news and on this board.
There are so many sides to so many stories. She learned a very valuable lesson. She wishes she could go up to the co-worker and explain her insights, as they may have so much in common, and she could introduce her to her dearest friends, but that dialog will probably never happen now.
What are these kids going to do when they leave the sheltered environment of an Ivy League campus and enter the real world? No one out there is going to coddle them and bend over backwards to suit their tastes…You know what? I’m glad I’m graduating in December, the increasingly stupid antics by SJWs is something I will definitely not miss.

than that is her take on reality how the real world is(her opinion) and her choice on how to deal with the problem. she will perhaps lose her job…she is an adult and it is her decision to make.
and wanting to introduce her to her roommates from college and explain her “insights” sounds like someone who needs to get legitimacy from a stranger who filed a false compliant against her. that makes no sense. but like I said adults can choose how they handle situations.
Hmm…enough about affinity housing! The real issue on campus is the scourge of cultural appropriation…none worse than…free yoga classes!
http://www.ottawasun.com/2015/11/20/free-ottawa-yoga-class-scrapped-over-cultural-issues
Our yoga instructor is not amused…
Edit: read the whole article…it just gets better and better…
Hmm, I wonder what the social justice warriors are going to attack next given that they are attacking yoga for cultural appropriation.
I got it. Jeans are also known as dungarees, and dungarees came from India, using cloth originally made by workers in Bombay (sorry Mumbai) who of course were oppressed by the English. Jeans are a symbol of white oppression, and nobody except the native people of Bombay/Mumbai should be allowed to wear them!
I wonder which social justice warrior is going to organize jean burnings on campus?
@hebegebe I guess racism in america just doesnt exist All those unarmed blacks shot in the back are just simple mistakes. You want some other social justice causes to work on 1. income inequality 2. controls so the rich cant buy elections 3. tax reform 4. job outsourcing 5. made up claims of voter fraud to keep certain classes of people from voting 6. stop the war on women. If you need more let me know.
I seriously doubt that the negatives felt by the students were the primary cause of the protests. Much more likely is that they had a cause (eg. higher percentage of URM students or faculty), and using these tools was an effective way to achieve their goals. And yes, this can work in the real world too, like beating up a market segment such as Silicon Valley for similar goals.
Sorry dad but some people just get sick and tired of having to put up with racism on a daily basis including in Silicon Valley
@tiger1307
^Really? Is there a safe space to run to?
ETA: specificity
last comment was addressed towards dad of 3
Judicial killings by police is a real problem. Why did you feel it was necessary to add “unarmed blacks” in your statement?
I am not white, but I wonder, why was there no national outrage when an unarmed white teenager was shot in the back by police? Is his life worth less attention than Michael Brown’s?
That same article says that blacks killed by police make up 25%, even though they make up only 13% of the population. So on that score, it seems that there is a racial component. But on the other hand, blacks commit about 50% of the homicides in the country, again despite being only 13% of the population. So there are going to be far more encounters between police and blacks then between police and other racial groups. So is that 2:1 ratio still too high, or is it lower than expected?
Can we find out more about the war on women?
Silicon Valley is one of the most meritocratic places on earth. You could be a 3-ft overweight Martian for all they care, as long as you can write code, and write it well. Race doesn’t matter, which is why Asians have thrived there.
I do believe that Silicon Valley has a problem with women because of its “brogrammer” culture. But not race.
^ Young women in the dating age do not have a “problem.” Gender matters more than race when there is such a huge imbalance in supply and demand in this “market” in Silicon Valley.
If we consider Asian Americans not as minority (like in our college admission practice), there are indeed very few minorities in the workforce in these hi-tech companies in SV. This is especially true for some mid to smaller sized companies here. Sometimes there is zero African American employee – this is especially true if we exclude the African Americans who are new immigrants. (The diversity is much “worse” than that in elite colleges, I think, likely because these smaller companies, unlike say Ivy leagues, are not constantly under everybody’s “radar screen” so they are less concerned about this. A larger companies in SV still need to keep an eye on such issues though.)
For some, this is racism when the outcome results in fewer people of their race. Just like race-blind admissions policies in college is attacked by the same people who complain about racism.
Could you imagine a bunch of employees at a company in SV dare to take over their CEO’s office without any consequences?
No wonder people tend to believe that the business world is more right leaning and the academic world is more left leaning. I once worked for a company whose CEO explicitly asked the employees to vote for Republican politicians. (not sure if this is legal or not.)
