Not sure if there was a thread on this already (don’t think there was), but about a month ago, Princeton made the decision (shortly before the BJL protests) that college “masters” are to be renamed college “heads,” presumably on the grounds that the term “master” evokes slavery. Many colleges, such as Harvard, are following suit and it seems that some reflection on whether this change is truly beneficial and whether this change is a good precedent would help.
Personally, I’m not sure if the new term is any better, since at this level of meticulous interpretation, “head” also carries many inappropriate connotations. For one, there was a yikyak post about relationship advice given by a college master/head along with the sentence “best master ever.” There were replies that “master” was an incorrect, but using “head” in that context, as pointed out by the OP, could lead to several possible interpretations.
Furthermore, with this change in title of college “master,” what will happen to Master’s degrees and eventually, Bachelor’s degrees? Will headmasters be called “headheads” or something else?
