So I'm well aware that we have a month to go until we find out if we're in or not (fingers crossed), but there appears to be no decision thread yet! Just figured I'd start one.

I wish we could find out now lol

I wonder why UMD makes all the early app decisions on the same day. What are its advantages to the Admissions Office? Surely, some of the applicants were eligible for admission from the day their apps were read–why wouldn’t UMD make announcements on a rolling basis? wouldn’t making such announcements enable UMD to hold onto some students who’ve already decided to not wait to hear from UMD and to enroll somewhere else?

If I recall correctly, UMD released decisions on Jan 31st when I applied two years ago. Those applicants who apply by the priority deadline make up the majority of UMD’s class for that admission cycle.

Plenty of schools have eliminated rolling decisions and decided to send out decisions on all of the same day for multiple reasons.

Personally, I believe that there is nothing wrong with the decision to make all admission decisions available on the same day plenty of schools partake in this especially during the regular decision rounds in april. UMD’s notification is still before plenty of schools(IVYS and etc) that respond in April.

Of course some people make their enrollment decision prior to when UMD releases their decision but I suspect that is only applicable for students that got into their first choice early and were able to afford it. I assume most people wait to hear back from all their schools especially since financial aid awards do not tend to come out till the early spring at best.

Argh, the wait is just so ridiculous because I applied in, like, super-early October - I’ve been waiting for ages! I wish I could just find out already.

Less then a month now guys!

A few questions to mull over in the meantime…

I’m assuming LEP (limited enrollment programs) will have their decisions released on Jan 31 as well. Can anyone confirm that?

What scholarships are available/are they known for giving out some merit scholarship, espec to OOS?

Honor or scholar program notification?

If it is the same as last year, you will find out about the LEP on the decision day. (1/31) Also in the acceptance will be an invitation to CP Scholars or the Honors College if applicable.
There are three different scholarships…Banneker Key, President’s, and Dean’s. BK being the best, then President’s, then Dean’s. They obviously give out these scholarships, but I wouldn’t say they are “known” for giving them out. To the contrary, I would say they are fairly difficult to receive. Probably on par with other state schools that are ranked similarly.

Also, from what I recall, my daughter wasn’t notified of the scholarship until early spring.

In addition to mentioning Banneker/Key, my notes on scholarships for UMD suggest that there are two other kinds and each offers a sliding scale based on certain criteria. Of course, you must have applied for admission by 1101 and you must file a FAFSA by 0215.

President’s Scholarship 2-12K/yr “Academic achievement, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and an essay are the criteria reviewed”

Dean’s Scholarships 1500 for 1yr to 4500 for 2yrs “academic achievement, results of standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and the essay”

I could find nothing about an oos tuition-waiver. The sense I have is that UMD is not a place that’s real generous to ANY students. Someone told me, might have been terpmom7, that there are 60-80 Honors students each year and not all of them get merit.

Wasn’t me who said 60-80 honors students each year. That seems low, but I wouldn’t dare argue with jkeil911! I do know that not all Honors students receive scholarships.

my bad, then, terpmom7. I don’t know where I came up with that number then. I’m going to do some more research and report back.

“that there are 60-80 Honors students each year and not all of them get merit”

Actually, there are hundreds of students admitted to honors college. There are some specific programs within honors college, such as GEMSTONE (the cr

Honors College reports 750-1000 new students each year. So these are the top 20% of the 4900 u/gs that enroll each year. So much for my memory.

thanks, maryversity.

Hi guys, January 31st is really starting to creep up now which kind of sucks because the monday afterward i start midterms…
