what are the pre-admission college interviews? i heard a few people are going to one when they were visiting a college. does this help with admissions?

I just came back from one today! College interviews are not required but highly recommended. They can only help you. In a normal interview, you get to talk to an admissions counselor for about 30 minutes. This gives the counselor a sense of your personality, extracurriculars, and what interests you. Afterwards, the interviewer will write a short summary about you that will be read by whoever ends up reviewing your file when you apply.

You can also ask questions about the college and the admissions process. I’ve found all of my interviews so far to be very helpful and enlightening. Definitely sign up for interviews!

Not every school will offer them, in fact, most don’t. You’ll usually know if the school(s) you’re applying to have one that you can do, and they can help you out, to varying degrees. As said, it is also a good time for YOU to ask questions too, it shows your interested and want to know more.

It really depends on the school. I had some that were very laid back and basically just a conversation with an alum; talked about the alum and the school just as much as about myself. I’ve had others that were much more like a job interview, with the interviewer just rattling off questions, though they still tended to be less formal than a job interview.

thank you all for the info. i am still a little confused. does this interview replace the ones that you go to after you apply to the school or what?

what i meant was that does this pre-interview replace the one that colleges invites you to after you submit your application?

“They can only help you”

Not necessarily. If you know you’re terrible in front of people, I wouldn’t expose a weakness. Negative interview write up reports DO happen. If you have particularly extreme shyness or nerves in front of people, I would advise you not to do an interview.

“does this pre-interview replace the one that colleges invites you to after you submit your application?”

Usually, YES. For my alma mater, local interview requests outnumber the slots available. For those applicants that rec’d an on-campus interview, they are put at the bottom of the priority list. Unfair to give one kid 2 interviews when others have had a chance at none.

As stated earlier many schools don’t offer or require an interview at all. Some schools do consider interest in the college in their admission criteria. In that case it’s a good idea to try to interview. Look up the Common Data Set for the school, section C7, to see if it’s considered.

Okay i think i understand now. Thank you guys for explaining it to me.
