So I've finally got all of my applications in, I have my auditions lined up and they're coming up in about a month. I have already picked and learned my dramatic/Shakespearian monologue. However, I've had trouble finding a good contemporary comedic monologue. I've spent endless hours online and in book stores trying to find one. So I finally contacted my acting coach, who has been very good to me, and of the 7 or 8 monologues he showed me, one stood out as one that I could sink my teeth into and get some good laughs with.

However, according to my good friend Google, it's on the 'overdone' list. It's not Neil Simon or Christopher Durang or anything, in fact I hadn't heard of it. But it's apparently overdone, which is understandable. I just don't know whether to abandon it and keep looking, not knowing what I'll find, or just embrace it and do it to the best of my abilities. Anyone have any thoughts on 'overdone' monologues?

If you think you can do well then I would say go for it. Because if you REALLY succeed you will show them that you stand out and they will want you. However, that is taking a risk, cause you could fall into the slump of everyone else who does it, and won’t do anything special.

I do monologues on my youtube channel - dreamdaily94. This isn’t advertising, ahahhaha, I’m just saying you can look into the ones that I’ve done and pick one. I only have one comedic monologue as of right now that you could do called “Funny Girl” but I don’t think it’s the best. I will be doing one from Butterflies are Free which is really really good so if you check back tonight on my channel it will probably be up. You can watch it and see if you want to do it.

Okay, so my Butterflies are Free is up! Check it out – my channel is dreamdaily94. I think it’s a REALLY really great monologue; it’s one of my favorites. I hope you like it. You can do a lot with it in my opinion… you can make it really funny or tone down the funny. Best of luck to you! :)

That’s actually the exact monologue I’m doing… Oh boy, I guess it is overdone. Oh well. It’s two weeks before auditions. I don’t think there’s anything I can do now except own it.

My son used what some might consider an overdone monologue from LARAMIE PROJECT last year for his NYU audition. He owned it – and he was accepted ED. He also used the same monologue at an industry event and got signed by an agent. Overdone or not, if you love the monologue and make it your own, you’ll get a great response. So, go for it!

KHSDFOIASUDFOIAU BvilleLady!!! Sorry, I had a little spasm. I am doing The Laramie Project as a performance with my acting class! It’s an AMAZING play. Most of the monologues are very serious and depressing, since the whole idea of the play is definitely nothing to joke about. I’m trying to think off the top of my head if you can do a funny one… I know there is a script online if you want to look through it. Zubaida Ula has a monologue sorta towards the beginning that’s funny, but I don’t know if it’s long enough. You could probably work with it. If you find an online version, hit Ctrl + F and type in “Islam 101” and it will take you straight to it, I bet. I also have a monologue from The Laramie Project on my youtube channel that I did about a week ago. I did Romaine Patterson. It’s not comedic whatsoever, but you can take a look at it if you need to get the overall feel for the play.

As for Butterflies are Free monologue, it’s one of my all time favorites. I didn’t know it was overused, sorry! But I do feel that there is a WIDE range you can take with that. You can make it very funny, or you can subtly make it funny, or very sarcastic,… so on.

Best of luck on whatever you decide to do! Good luck :)
