I just got my cast off from a broken foot and ankle that required 2 surgeries. I’m looking for things that will help with scarring. They can be OTC or natural home remedies. TIA
@CottonTales - I wish you a speedy recovery.
I have used BioOil when I had scrapes, cuts. etc. Just don’t apply it to broken skin. It’s easily available at stores such as Target, CVS, Walmart, etc. or online.
Good luck!
You can try Mederma. It is a topical gel that allegedly reduces scarring. However, results are very mixed. It is available OTC and can be found in pharmacies and on Amazon.
This is what the plastic surgeon suggested for my son after major surgery
First off talk to your doctor since things can affect your scarring. But mederma works well. For thicker scars silastic sheeting works well and this comes in different forms. But talk to your doctor first. No one here knows your history and don’t apply any of this too early. I have my foot /ankle patients wait 2-3 weeks and you have to make sure the incisions are fully closed.
That is the silastic sheeting I am talking about.
Excellent advice. I was going to edit my post to add “ask your doctor,” but our resident doctor already said this. Thank you!
Agreed, I believe that this was not used until he was 4 weeks post op.
I have seen people not listen and apply crap to incisions too early and actually delaying healing. Listen to your doctor and stop internetting stuff.
Do those sheets work on old scarring, like from years ago?
Thanks all for the product advice. I just got my cast off yesterday and was so excited that I forgot to ask my Dr. Also, CC always has nuggets of information, and I was just looking for advice on the products that have been used and worked well from the CC community. @Knowsstuff , my daughter and son in law are both physicians so I will of course ask for their advice as well. I was just thinking that maybe a CCer had some thing that they had good results from.
Reply was meant to entire thread, sorry
Yes. I started using a different form years ago that I got from Israel. They were fantastic but expensive. We have used then on old scars and they were helpful. This product above isn’t expensive. I didn’t read it but we put it under pressure to the wound.
No… Lol. Haha, forgot your kids. Ask your doctor. Just call and ask. It’s usually a few weeks after the incisions are removed not right away. The reason I said this is that they don’t deal with this daily most likely. Ask your doctor. I had an OR nurse take out her own sutures in 5 days and we do it 14-21 days later and her incision just opened up. They do it in the field she worked in or something. I had to go back to resuture it. Trust me… Lol… Ask your surgeon. The staff should know as well.
I had a bad scar on my neck from a biopsy, a few steroid shots at the dermatologist really helped.
Long term just wanted to mention that avoiding the sun on the scar area will really help with preventing further discoloration (maybe not much of an issue w/a foot/ankle surgery, but just in case!)
Scar massage with lotion or cocoa butter. Mederma is fine but expensive. Really doesn’t matter what lotion or cocoa butter you use. The key is the massage and pressure on the scar to realign the tissue and keep it flat. It will probably take a year for the scar to fully mature and fade out. Use sunscreen in the sun.
Palmer’s Cocoa butter for scarring. I get it online from Walgreens, about $3-4 a jar, and pick it up. Otherwise, it runs anywhere from $6-10.
