prominent chess club?

For the sake of background information, i'm the chess captain at my high school (mostly by default than anything else) as well as the only girl. Sad, i know.

Now, simply by the nature of Chicago, i'm assuming there will be some crazy grandmaster-ish people attending. When i think of chess, i think of nerds; when i think of nerds i think of Chicago--transitive property anyone? However...i really don't know that much about it. How many people participate? Is it a huge chess gathering where you just play whoever strikes your fancy or is it more of a sit-down-and-listen-while-someone-teaches-you-something-you-never-would-have-seen-on-your-own type of thing? Andy scrap of information would be appreciated. ;P

thanks guys

and to all you chess players out there--holla!
