What makes you the perfect candidate for FIT? (Fashion institute of technology in NYC and im applying for Fashion Merchandising and Management)

Growing up my mother told me, “Rylee, choose career you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life”. Once she said this to me ideas popped into my head, but none really stuck. As a kid, my favorite games and activities revolved around fashion, but being so young I did not know that my passion for fashion could be a career. One computer game in particular really opened my eyes and exposed me as a pre-teen to the world of fashion. In this game you owned your own boutique, designed and sold your own clothing, and bought from other boutiques. Even though this was just a computer game, it taught me many merchandising strategies. Everything from the layout of your boutique, to the clothes displayed, to spotting trends, was important in order for your boutique to thrive. Once I discovered the Fashion Institute of Technology and explored fashion as a career, I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life.
What makes me stand out from the rest is my creativity and determination. I believe that these qualities, as well as many others, are vital to be successful in the fashion industry, and even in every aspect of life. When something means so much to me, like fashion, I will stop at nothing to achieve it. Nothing is ever handed to you; you must work hard and set your sights high. In these past few years I’ve really turned myself around emotionally and academically. I went from not really caring about my schoolwork as much as I should, to it becoming one of my top priororities. My creativity is what I value the most in myself. Creativity is finding new ways to problem-solve, to think, and even to imagine. I believe that creativity is often an overlooked trait because when most people think of creativity, they think of artists. Creativity is not only in art; it’s a way of thinking. Working hard and doing well in school is something that is very important to me. All throughout high school I’ve faced many challenges and obstacles that try to stand in my way of success, but what I’ve learned from these challenges are that you will only get stronger. I don’t let challenges limit me; I challenge my own limits.
This summer I flew from Wisconsin to New York City to tour the Fashion Institute of Technology. It was such an amazing experience and even though it was only my second time being in NYC, it already felt like home. Being a small town girl with such big city dreams means that I will try even harder to make those dreams come true, and those dreams include pursuing my love for the fashion industry at FIT. Attending the Fashion Institute of Technology would be an honor and a dream come true to be able to study and build experience at such a prestigious school located in the heart of fashion itself. Fashion is everywhere, and that’s what I love so much about it. It’s the way we dress, it’s on the streets, it’s the way we live, and it’s in my heart.
