Pros and Cons of Undergraduate in the United Kingdom

I am seriously considering going to a school in the UK (particularly the University of Edinburgh). I am attracted to it mainly because of its great reputation, location in Scotland, and the different structure of its classes and academics compared to the U.S.

What do you think are some of the pros and cons of studying abroad for 4 years at a school like Edinburgh?

I believe tuition is significantly cheaper (even for international students) in the UK than the US… even with travel + room & board, it would still be less than college in the US.

Another pro- getting to live in a foreign country and experience a new part of the world.

Con- it’s harder to get home. If you get homesick, you can’t just drive or take a train home. It will also take a long time to get home- a long flight plus time in customs. It will also be difficult and possibly expensive to move your belongings.

The first con, in my opinion, is that you are mostly limited to one subject. Scottish universities are slightly more flexible, but you still lack the extreme flexibility of the American system.

The second con is that UK universities can be quite expensive ($32-45K depending on the exchange rate), and financial aid for American students is practically nonexistent.

oops, I mixed up UK universities with Canadian universities (at McGill, it’s less than $20k for internationals).
