Hi there..I was wondering how many UCLA admits will be commuting this fall--and what are the pros and cons of commuting to UCLA/living on campus/apartment. I have a 40 min drive to UCLA..is it worth it??

I’m not putting up with the 405 from OC.

I’m not a baller, those extra thousands per year = money in my pocket, or paying off bills.

There is no pro to commuting besides financial purposes.

Commuting 40 minutes on the 405 in famous LA traffic everyday may cause insanity though.

If you are living in the OC… traffic would be killer… its not always going to take 40 minutes… it might take 2 hours at times. I think the drive might make you tired and less focused on your studies. My sister thought the same thing that commuting will not be a big deal, but once you actually try it, you will become very aggravated and tired from the drive. Definitely get housing on campus.

40 min doesn’t seem that bad…but after a month you’re gonna be kicking yourself!

I had a gf who tried commuting on weekends from UCLA for a while to go to work. Let’s just say she gave up on that after about 2 months.

Every single freeway is packed from 2-7 PM. The 405, 91, 57 & the 10.

I didn’t believe her until I did it myself.

I would highly recommend not for the sole reason that if you have gaps between your classes, you will be doing nothing and since you’re not living on campus, you will not know as many people to spend that time with.

I really recommend that you find housing near UCLA. Communting in traffic will give you nightmares and it will be horrible if you overslept, get stuck in traffic and panic because you have a midterm.

if you live away for 45 minutes, I strongly suggest to commute. save yourself money and focus on your studies. It’s up to you, but if I were you I would definitely live at my home than to rent an apartment or live in school.

I am coming from the westlake area…so my drive is not very long, but I am worried about traffic–when is there less traffic congestion on the 405/101

chesser, are you also going to commute??

saba, westlake by alvarado in LA or what city? If its in alvarado dont worry about it, stay home and you’ll be fine, otherwise think about it. I still strongly suggest you commute because of financial reasons and you can live in your own home still.

westlake, near thousand oaks…I don’t know where alvarado is…lol

saba 100% yes I am commuting. no question about it, I am excited and happy as I can possibly be as I was scared to move out to san diego or santa barbara without a car but now I am happy. congrats on your acceptance by the way!

thanks…congrats to you too!! I am just worried about the traffic and bad roomates :/

yeah not a lot of people commute but I mean now that its ucla and its near for me not really actually since its also 45 minutes but to me thats nothing as its closer to my CC and I am used to those bus transportations you know. I am very very excited, and well if you live in thousand oaks if it takes you 45 minutes and you want to stay in your home and save money just commute it.

even on the weekends the fwys are packed from OC to LA, taking up to 2 hrs at a time. way too stressful and you won’t meet many people that way…

That sounds good…thanks for the advice!:)

saba5678, DO NOT COMMUTE. I live in Oak Park, and have driven to LA from these parts enough to know you will KILL YOURSELF. KILL YOURSELF. Unless you take classes at 3 in the morning, the 405 will be the death of you.
