Prospective Candidate

I am a junior in high school looking to see where I stand in admission to West Point.

I attend The Hotchkiss School, a prep school in Lakeville, CT.
I currently take 3 AP classes with an unweighted average of 91.2/100, putting me in the top 10% of my class (~120 kids.)
I played two varsity sports freshman year, Cross Country and Wrestling, and since Sophomore year I have been tri varsity (XC, wrestling, and Crew.) I anticipate being captain of at least two of those sports by Senior year.
I am in very good shape. I meet the physical standards very easily.
I am active in Debate, Newspaper, and Yearbook.
I am a peer tutor in writing.
I am on student council. Sounds impressive but really isn't that big a deal.
96th Percentile SAT
Volunteering: I used a grant from my school to volunteer in the Rocky Mountains building trails for two weeks after freshman year, I used that same grant to volunteer outdoors in Alaska last summer. I took a trip with my school to the Dominican to volunteer at an orphanage spring break sophomore year.

Other notes: I am a white male, my dad has very severe cancer, I am tall, poor.

I am looking very heavily into West Point because I am attracted to the leadership qualities its education is grounded in. I also am attracted by having to serve after my undergraduate studies, rather than pay tuition.

What should I aim to do this summer to become a more appealing candidate or increase my likelihood of getting a Nomination?

I greatly appreciate any feedback!

Hi energyturtle1! you appear to have a great profile. Here’s my advice:

  1. Open your file anytime after Jan 10th
  2. Complete your file to the academy before the end of school or in early summer, including all essays, teacher and counselor recommendations, physical exam, medical exam and have any SATs and or ACTs you have taken sent to the academy and submit your first 6 semester cumulative transcript.
Your goal is to be triple qualified academically, physically and medically before the rest of the prospective candidates are. You may even be offered a Letter of Assurance. Either of these will make you stand out from the crowd when you congressman and senators evaluate your file in October. Additionally completing your academy file early will leave just your congressman and senators applications for summer and fall plus of course your backup school applications. Over the fall you can update your academy file on any new test scores, awards, and activities you receive. In December you submit your fall transcript and in May your final transcript.
As far as summer goes, do what you want or need to do but do it well. Be sure that your boss can give a great character reference and that you display leadership qualities and work hard. Good Luck!
