Prospective Courses

I just thought it might be interesting to compare notes on what courses everyone is pre-registering for. Also, I had a question about how many courses we’re allowed to take as first semester freshmen: does anyone take 5 or is 4.5 the maximum?

If everything goes my way, my schedule will look something like this…

Introduction to Biological Investigation

Europe at the Crossroads, 1500-1789 (Freshman Seminar)

The Russian Classics: The Great Realists of the Nineteenth Century

Topics in Single Variable Calculus

International Politics (if 5 courses are allowed)

I'm already registered:

Fundamentals of Physics I 113
General Chemistry 108
French 228: Tellers and Tales
Developmental Psychology 231

They will really discourage you from taking 5.0, especially with the Bio lab and Calculus (those problem sets are time-consuming). They will encourage you to take 4.5, so that if you drop a class, you'll still be enrolled. I took 4.0 my first semester and 5.0 my second semester, but I had no labs. 5.0 is doable, but I wouldn't recommend it with your schedule (two reading/writing-heavy classes, one problem-set class, and a lab course). The manuscripts for Bio will take up a whole lot of time. Do you have any idea which Bio prof you would have (ie-what section)?

Thanks for the imput kayrlis... sounds like I won't be taking International Politics then assuming my Calculus AP score is high enough to get me the credit I need for my math course. And no, I'm not sure which prof I'd want to have... any suggestions on good ones/ones to avoid if possible?

My D. is still debated but tentatively:

Chem 125 Principles probably
Classics 101 Civ. in Question
English 101 22 What's love..
Spanish 205 or 206
Drama 103 Stagecraft

Does anyone know if the Civilization course is a large lecture or have any comments on good Freshman professors.

John Long is AMAZING. I had him for Bio 105: Brains, Brawn and Behavior. He's hilarious and very easy going, but a little of a tough grader for 106 I hear. I had Nancy Pokrywka for 106 and I really liked her. I heard that, at all costs, you should avoid taking classes with Schlessman.
However... checking on Ask Banner, I don't recognize any of the profs... I think Straus is supposed to be good...

ctParent2006: I checked AskBanner while I was there and the class limit on Classics 101 is 15 people and there are 10+ spots left in each of the three sections.

Do not take Books, Children, Culture as a Freshman Course. It sounds awesome, but the professor is terrible. People enjoy Readings in US History and the Hip-Hop as a Literature freshman courses.

any thoughts on Beneath the Apocalyptic Landscape or School Days?

It sounds like School Days might be the course that karylis recommended not to take we are pilots. Maybe it's the same thing with a different name?

And thanks for the suggestions karylis... as a pretty much clueless freshman looking forward (more or less) to late August, I appreciate any and all imput :D.

I'm hoping for:

Readings in US History (Freshman Course) or What's Love Got to Do With It
Intro Theatre Making (Drama 102)
Elementary Italian
Intro to Psychology
and maybe Europe at a Crossroads but I don't really plan on taking 5 unless one is a dance class

Can anyone shed light on the survey situation. I have heard questionable things about de leeuw. Are Holloway and Baird significantly better? Thanks for any help

I've heard mixed reviews about De Leeuw. He's really disorganized, and bad for intro. Apparently he's good for Developmental because that's his subject. But BAIRD IS AMAZING. Her class is very entertaining, her grades are fair, she's hilarious, I want her to be my major adviser, you should try to take it with her. I don't know anything about Holloway, but according to ratemyprofessors, he's hot and a good teacher, but difficult.

What department is School Days in? I can't find it on the schedule. The course I took was with Prof Bickerstaff and the basic description was "a cross-cultural study of children's literature." Which it was not. It was listening to her tirades about racism and sexism and barely relevant to the material we were reading. The books were good though.

ETA: It's a different course. Books, Children, Culture is through Education/Africana Studies(which is part of why it's a horribly designed course)

School Days is an English 101 section.

thanks, I found it, which is why I edited my post to add that they're not the same.

de leeuw made a mistake grading my final this past semester for intro...it dropped my grade half a letter grade. Thankfully I noticed something was fishy and got it corrected, but ya, he is very disorganized (nice guy and fairly easy though)
