Hi there! I'm an international undergraduate student and have got the chance to go WUSTL at Art&sci, deciding to stick to my major economics. The university is amazing but I'm a little worry about the prospects of an international students there especially in the job market. And there are several questions specifically:

1.Will a profile of an international student prevent me from getting an intern or job?
2.Will the location of St.L limited the chance to get a job?
3.What's the prospects or facts of students of WUSTL, especially econ major, to get a good offer in other parts of the country? Like NY?

There might be some misunderstanding of "the University" or "the City" and I hope you guys don't take it seriously, after all I have never been there. Thank you for your responsing^^

I don’t think being an international student will in any way limit your internship opportunities, however it will make it harder for you to receive need-based financial aid, and will probably affect you admission.
I just applied for wash U (ED) this year, so I don’t even know whether I’m attending, and thus can’t answer your last two questions.
However I do think I read somewhere that in St. Louis everyone thinks of Wash u students as harvard students, so it’s quite easy to find an internship/job in the city of st. louis.

Maybe I misunderstood, but did you already get into Wash u?!
“Hi there! I’m an international undergraduate student and have got the chance to go WUSTL at Art&sci, deciding to stick to my major economics.”
how do you know that you’ve “got the chance to go to WUSTL”, already?

Many internships (especially in the sciences/engineering) will require US residency/citizenship. Similarly with jobs, a lot of defense contractors require residency/citizenship. As for Economics, it’s probably closer to not an issue (although you’ll have to worry about things like VISAs)

I also have no clue what you’re talking about in the rest of your post.

I know through personal experience that international students can have internships in many different areas, and can apply for part time jobs and stuff. I think as long as betaman doesn’t look for a full-time job, he/she should be fine.
and betaman, again, how do you know that you have a chance to attend Wash u? Do you mean that you have the chance to apply, or did they already mail you a decision?

Of the maybe 20 co-ops/internships I’ve applied for this semester, at least 10 have directly stated that they use the co-op/internship pool to hire for full time positions. So yes, they very much ask whether or not you have a visa and/or need sponsorship.

Of those 10, I can definitely name several that for sure would not hire non-us citizens/permanent residents.

That being said, it’s not a WashU thing - it’s something the OP will have to deal with at any school.
