Prospects on Duke Med?

Hey! I Haven’t used this since college applications but I was wondering if anyone could chance me for these prospective internships for next summer. I am a rising sophomore at Princeton University, I am Majoring in Chemical and Biological Engineering (arguably the hardest Major in the school).

My GPA is 3.51- top 30% of class - (will increase this year since first year engineering are mostly weed out classes)

I am the founder and president of a start-up that provides university mentors and tutors to inner city students at no cost to the students.Currently we have 50 Plus mentors from Cornell, Berkely, Yale, Brown, Princeton, and Harvard,

I am a research assistant at the Princeton Tissues Morphodynamics Laboratory

I completed a Highly selecive exchange program at Cambridge University this spring break. Roughly 50 Princeton Students applied to the essay and Interview contest and the university chose me as one of five students to go on the expense paid trip.

I am currently working for one of the professors in the chemical engineering labs and plasma physics labs over the summer.

I am a private tutor for math, physics, Chemistry, and biology

I will be a community action (pre-orientation) leader in the fall

I am on the Engineers without borders team

I will be a chair on the Princeton University Energy Association starting this fall

Keep in mind, I did this in freshman year where opportunities were a bit scarce haha. I am an African-American Male and very hard worker. What do you guys think?

Well you’ve got a few more years. You will need to take the MCAT as I’m sure you already realize. The two most important factors that med schools care about are your GPA (esp science GPA) and your MCAT score.

I also don’t see anything on your EC list that relates to direct patient care. Consider volunteering in a nearby hospital or shadow a physician.

Also take a careful look at the Duke Med curriculum. Basic sciences are much shorter than other med schools.

Oh! I forgot to mention that I’m a volunteer at John F Kennedy Hospital and Princeton Medical Center!

And science GPA is around 3.6

You should be in good shape. Here is a chart of acceptance rates by MCAT scores and GPA. With your current GPA (3.5) and an MCAT score of at least >26 you have a 60-85% chance of at least once acceptance.

This is great compared to the overall average of 42%

Duke med chances are nearly impossible to predict as it’s hyper-competitive, but I would say that Duke med admissions DOES take into consideration the rigor/difficulty of your undergraduate institution and major. They’re not ignorant about it. So, I would expect that you could be below the “target” GPAs since majoring in chemical and biological engineering at Princeton is one of the most challenging curriculums in the country. Psychology majors that are pre-med at Penn State have a bit of an easier time getting a really good GPA.

@sgopal2: OP is not asking chances for one acceptance somewhere, but rather specifically Duke medical school which is certainly harder than most. So, yeah, I’d say they’re definitely in good shape to get into at least one med school within the U.S.; I don’t think the OP was even concerned about that. But I’d imagine that a 3.5 GPA is certainly very low for Duke med acceptees. Really interesting charts there by aamc. Thanks for providing.

Yes I realize he was asking for chances at Duke med in particular. However my post refers to medical school admission rates overall.

Here is an example of an interesting Duke Med student:
