I'd like to know where I said that it was.

I'd like to know too because I never said that you did.

thanks hokegoalie. and sixsixty, i had asked about hoke's program.

braves: how come when i play hockey i get skinnier overall and get really strong legs at the same time? I'd check your sources.

I was under the impression that training for strength and training for muscle size is different (i.e. powerlifter vs. bodybuilder)? And obiously you're getting skinnier because your caloric intake is less than your maintainence calories.

they ARE different, but as a beginner, like the OP is, gains in both will come thick and fast!

Let's say I want to lose about 30-35 lbs of fat and want to put on a considerable amount of muscle.... where should i start? With lots of cardio at first, and then slowly bring in the weight training, or do both right at the beginning? Also diet recomendations?

You should read up on basic things like calories and macronutrients if want to lose weight successfully. You might want to visit bodybuilding.com and read through some articles just as a starting point. But be aware that there are some BS stuff on that site, even more so in those forums. There's also a bunch of crap out there on the web. People who are new to exercise and nutrition won't be able to identify what's fact or BS.

My advice would be consult a fitness trainer or buy a nutrition textbook (not diet fad books). Find out which textbooks your College's nutrition courses uses and read one of those.

But whether your goal is weight loss or weight gain, you should weight train. The more muscles you have, the higher your metabolism will be so you'll be able to burn calories faster. Keep in mind that you won't be able to gain significant muscle mass while you're on a weight loss cycle. You'll more than likely be worried about muscle preservation while you're losing fat.

you want to weight train first, and after you are satisfied with your size, you will want to do cardio to get rid of the extra fat.

yeah you should weight train either way, you dont wanna be losing too much muscles along with the fat. the first and most important piece of advice i can give is to switch you entire simple carb intake into complex carbs.
