NY 218 received a letter. Wonder if this is the lowest.

Wonder how this one out of 50000 will make it for one out of 15000 NSFM? what should you do or just wait?

233 - received letter.

I got a 216 PSAT in Pennsylvania. What do you think chances are for me making the cutoff? Also, does being on the cutoff mean you are in?

I received a letter in CT. My score is 216. Is it possible at all to get nmsf? Also, what colleges do most people send to? Top choice or safeties that give nm aid?

steelergolf11, look back in the thread, but I think the consensus was that Pennsylvania will not be coming down.

An Oregonians here? Curious whether the cut-off will go up or down…

I can confirm that the Commended Cutoff for 2012 will be 200. High school principal informed me of this today when he told me whether I made the cutoff or not

CA here. 203, received letter today.

223 NY got letter.

200 is the cutoff this year. High school principal congratulated all the kids moving on in national merit.

Steelergolf. Yes, if you are equal to or greater than your state cutoff you are in.

213 - Did anyone in Ohio get letters yet?

My counselor showed me the letter that was sent to the school administrators, and it said that all students scoring a 200 or above were in the NMS program, athough it did not specify whether we were commended or a semifinalist yet.

I had a 217 from CT… anyone have any idea what the semifinalist cutoff will be this year?

nawtsocliche: 217 is a great score, but could end up just short of the cutoff for CT this year. It was 220 last year and would need to drop 3 points. Looking at the state level-data, it looks like CT will drop, the question is how far. Good luck!

227, got a letter in NY

204, FL, received letter. I dont think I have any chance at making SF, is there any advice about what to do now?

I live in California and the principal spoke to the students today who qualified for NM. Based on the upward trend of California’s cutoff (last year was at 221) I’m a bit anxious. I scored a 220. To the experts out there, what are my chances of becoming a semi finalist?
Also, if the cutoff is exactly 220 and I score a 220, does that mean I’m qualified as a semi finalist?
Thanks

You qualify with a score equal to or greater than the cut off.

Alanhyoon: I’m no expert, but the data I’ve looked at suggests there is a reasonable possibility that California will drop at least a point, if for no other reason because the percentile ranges dropped for national selection indexes this year. For example, last year a 214 would have been required to be in the 99th percentile nationally. In 2011, the 99th percentile cutoff at the national level is 211.

California has indeed shown a general upward trend, rising from 217 in 2006 to 221 in 2010. But, the general downword pressure (shown both at the national level and in the California state data I’ve seen) points to a possible drop this year.

No guarantees, but keep your fingers crossed at least.
