PSAT HELP

Hi guys, I need help with this psat question.

Senator Schumer is one of the legislators who are going to discuss the budget with the president.

a. No Change
b. one of the legislators who is going
c. one of the legislators who has gone
d. one of the legislators who is gone
e. one of the legislators who were gone

Why would it be a. and not b.

It wouldn’t be a; clearly the Senator is singular and so he “is going” not “are going.” There could be a mistake in your review book, which isn’t that uncommon.

“Senator Schumer is one of the legislators who are going to discuss the budget with the president.”

The phrase “who are going to discuss the budget with the president” is modifying legislators, not one, so the verb “are” is agreeing with the plural “legislators.”

The answer would be B if the sentence was instead “Senator Schumer is one legislator who are going to discuss the budget with the president,” as in this case, the Senator is not one individual in a group of multiple legislators being described, but is instead one individual legislator who is being described. Thus, the dependent clause’s verb would have to be modified so that it would instead say “who is going to discuss the budget…” for this example.

Haha whoops! Thanks Vinefeather :)

No prob haha; you really have to watch for verb agreement with the SAT. :)>-
