PSAT/NMSQT Class of 2019

@connorkraska
What makes SAT math hard for some is not the advanced material but the way the questions are asked and the time crunch. If you found PSAT math really easy chances are that you will find SAT math easy as well.

So far my kids did WAY better in the SAT than the PSAT although they took about at the same time.

I honestly don’t understand why they take until December to grade all the tests. It would take a while to grade everything, certainly, given the sheer volume of tests, but two months seems a tad excessive.

The cutoff for my state is around 220, or a 1450/1460. I think I got maybe 3 wrong in ERBW and 3 wrong in math. Honestly, anything above a 1400 is good enough for me.

I took the PSAT yesterday too. I thought the math section was easy. I probably got 760 on that. Reading section, I know I for sure got 4 wrong. For writing, there were two questions I wasn’t sure about. Hopefully I made only those reading mistakes and got at least 1 wrong on the math. I live in Washington so the national merit cut off is 221  I don’t think I made it but I want at least 1470 haha.

Sounds like you’re right where you need to be. 1 wrong on math is likely a 750 and with the numbers you gave for ER I would say 37 and 35 so 720 would get your 1470.

Daughter didnt feel good about the math said 4 problems were tricky she pretty much guessed.

Definitely no NMF here Texas 221 needed lol.

Got 215 SI on the practice today. Last year’s cutoff was 215 in my state… so I’m seriously borderline. I felt really confident about reading but somehow missed 10 questions! Argh.

Wow it seems like a lot of people thought the PSAT was harder than the SAT… I’m planning on taking the SAT in December… If I want to score around a 1600, how much prep should I need if my current score is around a 1500? Math is a 800 I’m pretty sure.

Just took the Saturday PSAT. I thought the reading was extremely difficult but the writing and math were extremely easy.

@kimclan1 Thanks for reporting. My kids (juniors) thought the reading and writing were much easier than the August SAT, and the math was different…easier than the SAT for sure, but just different types of questions requiring analytical and rhetoric skills as the questions didn’t require equations per se, just thinking things through.

Wonder what the feedback will be for the other PSAT that will be given on the 25th.

Not sure how the CB will pull together all 3 tests to make it apples to apples for all…

I agree that the math was very easy, but I found reading easier than average and writing significantly harder. I’m bad at the ‘should this sentence/sentence fragment be included’ type of questions and there seemed to be extra of them.

math easy, reading not so bad…weird question on the writing.

I thought the reading was really hard, writing was ok but had some difficult questions, and math for the most part was really easy although I think I missed a few grid-ins on the math calc… praying for national merit although all my practice tests pointed to not even close… never know though

and yes, I’d agree that there were a lot of “should this sentence be included” questions. hate those

So what SIs to you think you all will have? The best case for me based on how I think I did would be -0M, -3W, -3R = 220 (1480) but I most likely did much worse. I don’t care as long as I make my state cutoff (probably around 215, praying it’s lower).

Reading was pretty hard, writing ok, and math really easy.

The math was super easy, I finished both sections with 10+min of extra time.

Writing was ok. I finished the test in 30min and spent the remaining 5 min on one of the questions that stumped me. I think I got it wrong.

Reading was really very difficult. I had to answer some of the questions on the last passage from memory because I didn’t have time to refer to the passage.

Overall, I think there will be a 1 point curve on the reading section.

DS also reported math was easy, and everyone else thought so too.

Sorry all, forgot to mention that my kids took the test on the 11th.

I may have missed 1 math if the consensus on reddit is correct (no I’m not posting or discussing questions, just reading)… that will drop my score so much :frowning:

@CharlotteLetter I doubt missing one in the math will drop a score so much. If you are talking about the SI - it is really heavily based off the reading and writing scores.
