about that sentence completion question regarding the modern writer/critic:
the answer cannot be incontrovertible/trouble BECAUSE:

"all but" negates the meaning of "incontrovertible", which means indisputable.

so, consider: although her status as a modern writer was "disputable" (replacing all but incontrovertible), her writings continue to "trouble" those who study her works. This is clearly confounded in meaning and comprehension.

I answered hypothetical/polarize (D), which suggests that her writings split her viewers into disagreement, or opposing ends, though she was an established writer.

the answer could very well be inconclusive/provoke (E), though, which troubles me. =)
my thoughts on this is that "provoke" is far too weak to act upon the first half of the sentence... dunno. i mean, isn't she, as a good writer, supposed to provoke her readers, if she's had success and has been established in such a way already? any ideas?

ahem... excuse me... just had a quick little question
what kind of scores do you need to qualify for the offered scholarships (i'm somewhat oblivious to how nmsqt rewards). i read a post somewhat recently saying that qualifying scores depend on the state you are from-- is that true?
thx, and good job to everyone who took the psat today

i got a semicolon on one and a colon on another.

the one with depending for iceberg

I believe the iceberg one was ", depending"

"i thought from teh progress in 2002 for farmers supported it, i don't know"

Yeah, that's what I thought--although it wasn't really "research", it was a fact backing up the idea that there are no risks involved w/ GMOs.

I put depending for the iceberg one as well.

In response to the above poster, when you say "all but incontrovertible", doesn't that mean that it is virtually incontrovertible?

the passage doesn't mention recent research.
However, benefits are mentioned, so I put the choice about the benefits

again, i thought that the acceptable answer was specifically for financial benefits?

or do i just have a terrible memory

wbapwo,

Are you talking about the one having something to do with nobel prizes and finding supporters that were rebels or something?

what was the semicolon sentence about wbapwo.

i kind of remember the iceberg one but i dont remember what i got.....

In the CR, why was the author being unfair to Spanish?

^^ yeah, had a problem with that one too

i don't think the passage talked about financial benefits, it said society.

the spanish one was hard. i put because he learned both but preferred english, but i think i'm wrong

jzf, I also chose the same answer for the hypothetical/polarize question. Now that I think about it, though, inconclusive/provoke makes sense too....(part of the reason I chose "polarize", though, was because it makes more sense in the context of politics). Ah, well.

about that sentence completion question regarding the modern writer/critic:
the answer cannot be incontrovertible/trouble BECAUSE:

"all but" negates the meaning of "incontrovertible", which means indisputable.

i don't think the "all but" expression means the complete opposite.

for example, if you were to say they were all but wiped out in the attack

that would mean they were all wiped out except one...so they were almost, completely wiped out..

so all but incontrovertible means almost incontrovertible?

we talked about the unfair spanish one earlier.....around post #130ish.

he was being unfair to spanish because he was giving too much attention to one way it spread.

was one of the vocab ones "vaunted?"
and was the last question in the grammar section D?

and does anybody remember their last 3 answers to the last critical reading section? it was the confusing article on that autobiography of the lioness or whatever. for some reason i got c for the last three; that doesn't seem right.

I can't remember the one w/ the semicolon

^exactly, i agree with you, all but can be replaced with "virtually" (ex. it was "virtually" incontrovertible)

"was one of the vocab ones 'vaunted?'"

Yes.

"lioness or whatever. for some reason i got c for the last three; that doesn't seem right."

If I remember correctly, I bubbled three c's as well.

"all but" is an idiom that means almost. So all but incontrovertible would make sense, contrasting with bringing trouble.

From yahoo dictionary: all but

Nearly; almost: all but crying with relief.

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/all

for the last question on teh grammar section, i put

women are as capable as men, even though...

oh i remember getting a triple towards the end daneshk....i think it was C.
