There is something to be said for over intellectualism. It spawns monstrosities such as Roland Barthes. I hope he burns in literary hell. Also, whoever came up with semiotics and thought that symbol analysis was revolutionary.

oh i see physics on here.
i took physics B last year. it was horrid. i learned nothing. all i know is F=ma. i dont evne know how to really use that.
i learned aboslutely zilch in the class and took my AP blind as in.... literally didnt study for it at all. there was no way i could actually cram a year's worth of physics with my AP book in 1 month.
i made a 3.
i made the mistake of taking physics C this year. first week of class i was reminded of physucks hell and quickly quickly changed my schedule to chem lab aide. hoorah chem rocks and boooo i hate physics.

um i dont think im as intellectual. i dont talk about politics. i have my own weird quirks. i am normal in some ways, abnormal in others. my friend goes to uofc right now and he has a gf, he has a social life, he isnt a "omg i need to study go away from me so i can isolate myself with books for 26 hours per day."
i think everyone will be different in their own ways. im sure there are D&D people, and those who party etc. but im sure you'll find your own niche/group of friends to hang out with.
i think it will be exciting to experience the atmosphere/community at uchicago. i cannot wait. although i am a bit apprehensive about the workload -_-

" ... difficult to discern the human ... "

since when did the human become a fetish?

your waitlisted automaton

Given that I'm not into beastiality the human has always been a fetish. Mmm...human.

Since when does discern imply fetish?

So what was that value thingy about "the human"? It came across as privileging one culture over another. It was intolerant and an insult to all automatons... you know. wink wink

Oh My God. I am a discriminator against automatons. A formal and public apology must be made quickly. In addition an affirmative action fetish must quickly replace my old fetish for humans.

Automans come to me....

i like geology.

I, Robot .

asimov <333

haha although I, Robot was kinnnnndaaaaaa CRAZILY ORGANIZED

I have a vintage printing set of the Foundation series. I sold my soul to Satan for them. He is my God. <3.

whisper

Orson Scott Card is better!

What?! Infidel! Asimov is the undisputed king of science fiction, all hail!

PS. Although technically according to the Asimov-Clark agreement Clark is first in Science Fiction and Second in Science, while Asimov is first in Science and Second in Science Fiction.

wait, you mean Clarke?

Whoops - yes Clarke. Arthur C.

Never!
Asimov maybe the undisputed king of science fiction textbooks, but Card get science fiction. Funny how a lack of charecters makes all the difference...

Don't even mention Clarke.

Back to the main subject of the thread, I have to agree with felipecocco and twilight4. I was really worried that chicago might be stifling with the level of pretension/pseudointellectualism (which may or may not really exist-who knows?), but reading these boards I think everyone's kinda worried about the same thing. i'm a firm believer in having a sense of humor and not taking yourself too seriously, and i think there'll be plenty of ppl at chicago who share that outlook- at least, I hope so :)

Clarke is king in my opinion. Hammer of God, Rama, 2001, 2010, 2061, 3001, Rama II. He is such a prolific writer and his books are all pretty decent. You must read his new book, Light of Other Days. It is one of my favorite Clarke books to date.

thanks -

I'll have to check it out, although I heard Clarke was in (semi?) retirement. Maybe he got bored. :)

What I want to know is, at Chicago, will girls be impressed by the completeness of my Xiu Xiu discography?

eyebrow raise
There should be no question in your mind.

P.S. What in Hades name is Xiu Xiu discography?
