Psychology Major For Medical School (Psychiatry)

I have always been interested in psychology but I have also wanted to be a psychiatrist. So I have been thinking in addition to pre-med I would major in psychology. The only problem is that since psychiatry is a medical profession, I have heard that you can only major in a science major. As far as I know psychology doesn't exactly meet the description of science even if it involves testing. But I want to do psychology since I like it and I see it as perfect for someone becoming a psychiatrist (Both deal with the mind).

But maybe I heard wrong or psychology is treated different. Is there any way I can major in psychology and still go into medical school to train to be a psychiatrist?

You can major in anything. There are already a lot of threads about this.

in my med school class there are people who graduated with the following majors:

sociology, psychology, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, horticulture, various engineering, art, art history, history, english, business, economics, education, spanish.

And you also don't need to major in psychology to end up in a pyschiatry residency. While there is some overlap, it's not nearly as much as you think, and pyschiatry is continually moving towards more and more pharmacological treatment plans.

Oh no I just want to take psychology out of interest. BTW, what do you recomend majoring in order to become a pychiatrist? I think there is also the psychobiology major which is more science. There is also neuropsychology too which is quite scientific but I hear that it is already covered under a psychology major.

Pick the major YOU want to do. Look at the classes you will have to take for each and decide which one you think you would enjoy more.

thats good advice :)
