How is the public transportation in Nashville? Since freshmen can't have cars I was wondering how they got about and if they used public transportation? This question is of course open to all Vandy students and Nashville residences alike.

i've been wondering the same thing. berry, i noticed on another thread that you are from mississippi too...what part?

I am from Laurel

How long does it take to receive your VU net id and stuff after the deposit was received?

Well, Vandy is in an area of Nashville where most of the necessities of the average college freshman are well within walking distance of campus. Restaurants, bookstores, drugstores, Blockbusters, Hillsboro Villages are all in the immediate area. The only thing that you'd need a car to get to is the nearest grocery (kroger or walmart) and store (target or walmart). SGA provides shuttles to these several times a semester, or if you make friends with an upperclassman, maybe you could tag along with them when they go.

If you want to go downtown (country music touristy things, Frist Center, clubs and restaurants) or to Green Hills (mall, movie theatre, and more restaurants), what most Vandy folks to is get together with a bunch of friends and get a cab, which usually averages out to be 5 dollars a person.

If you're feeling truly adventurous one weekend, you and friend can get a map of the bus system and take a bus to some far off destination. Rivergate Mall and Opry Mills are normal malls (as opposed to The Mall at Green Hills) that can reached by bus. If you can get over the "stigma" of needing to use a bus, then the trip itself can be quite interesting.

How long does it take to receive your VU net id and stuff after the deposit was received?

I'd two weeks at most. You get a PIN, which you use to activate your VUNetID and then you get do many other things, like apply for housing and whatnot.

when i visited, all the necessities seemed within walking distance, but if you wanted to go into town or shopping, you can take a cab. having never taken a cab before, i thought the price were ludicrous. . . it was $55 round trip (w a tip) to go from the campus to the opry mills outlets.
