Hi, I’m an upcoming freshman who is attending a public high school (Connecticut) in the fall. It isn’t rated the best, and the students generally all attend UConn (majority) or CCSU. A few students attend UHart.
I’m taking a class at Choate Rosemary Hall over the summer, and I really love the school. The class size is extremely small, and I’m only a few days in, yet I feel like I’ve learned a lot. The campus, etc. is amazing.
I do want to attend it for sophomore year possibly, but would it be worth it in the long-run? Will attending Choate (and doing well) be better for me than doing well in my public school? The school seems great and I feel like I could really be successful there, but would colleges even care?
I go to a public high school in CT as well. Honestly, UConn is a pretty decent public school, so having a majority of your students attend there isn’t shabby at all. I might be a little kind of totally biased
I don’t know enough about public vs. private, but if you can afford the school, and your parents are on board, do what you want. I’m sure succeeding in a more rigorous school will only look better for college.
Colleges don’t care if you go to a public or private school, they just care about your app. I agree with @LeopardFire; I don’t see why you should not go as a long as your family can afford it. Private schools do tend to have more rigorous courses compared to public schools, which can be appealing to colleges. There is also a question of ECs and whether or not you will have time for them and/or if there are any clubs you can join on campus.
I made this decision last year and choate was a school I was considering actually
I decided to stay at my public school. I made that choice bc I felt that I would stand out more at my public school, whereas at a school like choate I prob would have just been pretty average, the fact that my hs is ranked highly in the state, I already had a pretty good relationship w a few teachers and my guidance counselor, and, while I could afford- it made more sense to spend the money on college rather than hs
If you’re able to get into choate, can afford it, feel like you’ll do well there and truly like it though- I would say go:)
Bottom line - If you like it and your parents can afford it and you can get in, go for it.
