Purdue, OSU, UIUC or UMich for Aero Engineering

i've been accepted to Ohio State, University of Illinois, and University of Michigan for aerospace engineering. Hopefully, i will also be accepted to Purdue. I know the USNWR rankings (3-UMich, 4-Purdue, 6or7-UIUC, 25ish-OSU), but i want to know your impressions and experience about these schools.
baring a scholarship, umich will be most expensive, then uiuc, purdue and osu.

Other than Ohio State, I"ve heard tons of great things about all the other schools' engineering programs. I live here in Illinois and have met tons of outstanding alum from the UIUC engineering program. It's just a matter of whether you like living in the corn fields. Oh and you'll get into Purdue. Congratulations on getting into those schools so far. Either one you choose, it's a great deal.

thanks. anybody else?

Forget Purdue, its program may be ranked high but the school as a whole is not as good as UIUC and Michigan.

I think Michigan might be the overall better school (by a slight margin) than UIUC, but UIUC is better known for engineering and I personally would highly recommend UIUC.

i know i asked for opinions, but i can't help but disagree with most of what you just said.

i'm not applying to Political Science at Purdue; i'm applying to aerospace engineering.

i dont think that umich has a definite edge in reputability over uiuc and vice versa.

It is my belief that a higher ranking school with a lower ranking department is better than a lower ranking school with a higher ranking department.

Tough choice between UM and UIUC in my opinion.

Forget about Purdue and Ohio.. U must choose between UIUC and Umich..

why forget about purdue? everybody that i have talked to from the industry has said that it is a top school that they recruit from.

Go with your heart bro cause they are all great schools. Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine did a study this year and found that Purdue is the top choice of recruiters from the aerospace and defense industries. I know many friends that go to Purdue and they love it there. I personally think that Purdue will open more doors for you because of its excellent reputation for their engineering department.

Aviation Week ranking

1. Purdue

2. Penn State

3. UIUC

University of Maryland
Virginia Tech

4. Georgia Tech

5. Arizona State

Ohio State
UCLA
UCSD
University of Washington

This is my opinion.

1st Choice: Purdue
2nd Choice: UIUC
3rd Choice: Michigan
4th Choice: Ohio State

I would recommend doing your own research and seek advice from family and friends. Check out **************.com and look for students reviews for each of the above colleges. And also try to visit the schools and talk to the advisers about the opportunities that are available in the Aero Eng Department. then GO WITH YOUR GUT!

Good Luck!!

Lockheed considers all of your choices to be "key schools"...hence we do not distinguish between them based on academics....it will come down to the individual student.

yeah. i saw that Aviation Weekly thing too, and the defense industry is def where i want to be.

also, new developments --- 12k per year scholarship to UIUC.

Well, you don't really want to pick a school based solely on rankings (especially department rankings). What if you decide that you hate AE (as if that's possible ).

Picking a school based only on rankings is like saying "I want to spend my entire college career studying, and only studying." Attending a school with a consummate department isn't worth it if everything else is relatively deplorable.

(It's a contest between UMich and UIUC. With your scholarship in mind, I'd choose UIUC.)

can someone explain why its "a contest between UMich and UIUC"? what's wrong with purdue (who will prob be giving me 10k per year scholarship and is cheaper than those two).

I started out at purdue, aerospace engineering there is tremendous, the school is known for producing like half of the astronauts, you will definitely have an easier time getting tied into NASA, if thats what your into. U of I, os, and purdue are corn fields though, the guy to girl ratio at purdue is really bad. And there's nothing at any of those school other than frats, I personally would probably enjoy ann harbor a little more from your choices. All of the schools will give you a prestigious degree, and employers will look at all of your potential degrees the same, the difference between michigan and ohio state, isn't really that much its going to come down to your gpa.

Those who say that “forget Purdue” for aerospace are totally ignorant and should stop advising and jeopardising others career. Purdue is one of the best aerospace programs in the world.

There’s not really any difference between the 3 schools (forget OSU). Visit each and choose your favorite.
