Hey folks,

I'm a math undergrad thinking about the possibility of attending a good PhD program. My interest is generally on the pure side, perhaps in foundations, and I should also have a computer science minor by the time I graduate.

I've seen some advice, regarding grad school in general, that taking a couple of years as a lab tech or working in a relevant field can be good preparation for grad school. My question is, what might I be able to get into for a couple of years before grad school that would have me working in pure mathematics? I've searched, but haven't been able to turn up much on the pure side.

As I haven't been able to find much on that front so far I've got a bonus issue. (; I've considered pursuing a thesis masters in Computer Science prior to applying to a prestigious math PhD program. This sounds like it could be a boon to my application. My only reservation is that if it were just as effective I'd rather pursue option number one and have somebody pay me to get smarter rather than continue to take out loans.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Joe
