Putting in a you tube link on my common app essay?

In my essay I’m going with humor as my selling point. Its risky I know but I have a small clip that brings this home. I was in a national TV show seen by 11 million people some years ago and I do something funny. Is it appropriate to include that in my essay?

If I were you I would instead try to describe the event to the best of my ability. I don’t think the people who read your essay will look up a youtube video of you since the prompt does not ask for any other medium to represent yourself other than a typed essay.

You could post the link here though, I’d watch it

I would absolutely omit it.

It’s not YOUR work. How does it give them a reason to say yes to your application??

You’re asking an Adcom with a stack of essays 3 feet tall to stop reading and watch a video in order to consider your application. He/she simply does not have time to do that. It isn’t going to happen.

This is a writing exercise. Make your point through the words you write.

Thank you bjkmom. I agree. Just the humor essay has me a little nervous?

In addition to @bjkmom’s thoughts, I would add that it’s too long ago to be relevant.

If its not too long, include the link. Youtube has a way to structure the URL so it fast forwards to the part you’re in the clip. Don’t make them go through an hour long show to find a short snippet of your segment.

Don’t expect them to watch the link. As others have said, they have dozens of other essays to read. It might get watched however, if you are on the borderline, or go to committee.

Just describe what happens in it.
