I am a newly admitted student and I would like to ask current/past students about how much writing is required at Williams from those interested in more quantitative majors (say Math or Physiscs). Do courses in these fields require essays/manuscripts? Since we are at that, what about Econ?

TIA.

I can’t speak for individual subjects, but I read on the site that you have to take two writing intensive courses while at Williams. One by the end of your 2nd year, and one by the end of the 3rd.
I’m leaving you with the link for the writing intensive courses.

And these are the requirements for the BA

So Math and Physics really do not require much writing. The way the requirements work, you will have to take some social science classes and some art/english courses at some point as well as 2 writing intensive courses. Generally this means 20 pages of writing in the course throughout the semester, though there are definitely some courses labeled as writing intensive that are hardly ‘intensive.’ Econ classes completely vary- some have no writing and just problem sets- there are also econ courses that have many papers or tutorials that are all writing. It really depends on the courses you take in every subject because even physics and math can offer tutorials that involve heavy writing.
