I want to know how my chances are at Harvard. I am white, to my disfortune, and didn’t win any international science fair titles or spelling bees. My ACT score was a 35. I’m not sure what my GPA is bc I go to a private school that doesn’t offer AP courses, only math courses one year ahead. I have all A’s and a 98 avg. ranked about 15 in a class of 425. My EC’s are: social studies and Chinese clubs, a religious club and hiking club. I run track in the spring and over the summer I go to a DNA science camp in Cold Spring Harbor (about 120 hours research). I know that essays are important and I could definitely write them well. What are my odds?
I also take Chinese and the advanced math courses.
Harvard is a high reach for everyone. You have less than a 6% chance of admission, just like virtually everyone else.
Agree with @TomSrOfBoston: Harvard is a Reach for everyone, so if you want to apply then pend the money and apply. But do not focus on one school and look around for better fit’s and options.
To help your chances, focus on a specific passion in your essays. A lot of people try to dip their toe in the water in many different things because they think ivies are looking for ‘well-rounded’ kids, but when all applicants are ‘well-rounded,’ nobody stands out.
Gracias everybody
You may be the only person who says they are white to their misfortune. Please don’t say comments like that. You obviously have absolutely no idea how race impacts other people, do you?
Anyways, it is a crapshoot, just like for everyone else.
I wholeheartedly agree with @jarrett211.
If you’re white to your misfortune, are you dismayed that you don’t face widespread prejudice? Police violence? Endemic poverty? De facto segregation? Underperforming schools?
I could go on, but affirmative action wasn’t exactly put in place because African-Americans were a tremendously privileged, wealthy, and widely successful population.
Also, if you make up words like “disfortune”, you might be better of at Yale where George Bush although I might be “misunderestimating” you.
“I am white, to my disfortune”- I think you need to lose that attitude. I know I’m assuming, but you’ve probably never faced discrimination due to being white. Don’t act like being white will stop you from getting into Harvard or that an under-represented minority is going to “steal your spot” at Harvard.
Anyway Your act score is good and you have a high rank. Harvard is hard for everyone to get admitted to, so you can’t stress too hard. Your odds are pretty even with the average Harvard applicant, I wish you luck. Btw, what is your intended major?
