In NYC it’s illegal to ask on a job app if you’ve ever been arrested. But I’ve seen some school applications where they ask it. Does anyone know if it’s legal or have any experience with this question in a NYC school?
Thanks

I don’t have any experience. However, a school application is not a job application. Parents understandably do not want to shell out $70K a year to find out their student is roommates with someone with a history of dangerous behavior, although the same parents or student would probably have no problems sharing a workplace. That said, colleges tend to be very forgiving, if they think it is warranted (and if there’s a decent chance they won’t get sued later). Answer honestly on the applications. If discovered after enrollment, such an omission would be grounds for expulsion.
Arrest and conviction are different things.
