Dartmouth's faculty is very left leaning. The student body is about 90% democrats. There is a very small vocal conservative minority. Dartmouth is not a conservative school at all, when will this myth just end?

There is a big difference between having a conservative mentality and voting Republican.

I don't mind a party scene, but I'd rather not drink. Is there pressure to drink? is drinking the only option, or are there other options?

Also, I assume dartmouth is left leaning, but how great is the conservative presence on campus? Do professors (particularly in the gov't department) tend to have strong biases?

There isn't pressure to drink but drinking ends up being the only viable option.

Profs are far more liberal than the students and the students aren't even that conservative.

Hey dcd, nice to see you around here again! How's the real world treating ya?

Couldn't be better. Thanks for asking! :) How've you been?

I haven't heard of Dartmouth as a conservative school, but my perception may be distorted, as over here, institutions of higher education are traditionally considered liberal strongholds.

Where's "over here"?

On the other side of the globe. :)

Read my post about the culture here at Dartmouth (you can dig it up somewhere on these threads). Like Princeton, the school comes off as pretty conservative attitudes-wise. gellino's statement pretty much sums it up.

You know, this term's been pretty great so far. Winter's always been my favorite, and I'm working on an interesting project and taking some amazing classes. A lot of my '10 friends came back for the term, and so it's been really nice (IMO, I think Fall and Spring are the worst because there's always so much drama - not sure what Dartmouth was like in your day though. Care to comment?).

I’m a current undergraduate student, and I’m a lot like OP. I don’t mean to disappoint, but it’s better to prevent you from making the worst decision of your life than to write yet another “no, Dartmouth is so liberal and alternative now!” rant.

DON’T DO IT. Social life at Dartmouth revolves entirely around drinking. There’s very little legitimate intellectual engagement. You will find yourself hard-pressed to discover a social scene that doesn’t involve wading in beer on friday nights. Greek life is ridiculously dominant, and the stats you’ll find most places are underestimates, because freshman aren’t allowed to rush. About 60% of those eligible to be in frats/sororities are. I wish someone had told me this before I applied ED and made the worst mistake of my life.
