I'm thinking about applying to Dartmouth ED but I've heard that sexim and homophobia are pretty rampant there. I don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of very conservative people, or insensitive people for that matter. I know that there has been a lot of turmoil on Dartmouth's campus in the past few years, and I would like an insider's point of view on the recent installments and situations. Would someone let me know about political activism, or lack thereof, on Dartmouth's campus, too?

Ha ha ha ha. Dartmouth has an extremely active and open LBGT community. Don’t listen to me or AlumDartmouth (I’ll wait for as few more posts before deciding whether I thing s/he is our old friend DartAlum in new clothing). I hope some current students or more recent grads will respond to your question.

There is nothing wrong with being conservative (just fyi) as long as you aren’t encroaching on anyone else’s liberties. The type of conservatives you’ll find at Dartmouth are ‘Rockefeller Republicans’ who are quite liberal when it comes to social issues.

Hmmmm I think that the news overemphasizes things a lot. I visited and I think the Dartmouth community is pretty open, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Some of the minority students I talked didnt seem to like Dartmouth that much too. Dartmouth is still a lot like an old boys club and it does have a fair share of conservatives, but like Princeton1234 says, they are not really the typical kind actually more libertarian. I would definitely suggest going to visit before choosing ED and see for yourself.
