Question about classes/waitlists/etc

Sorry if this was a repeat thread but I had a quick question about being waitlisted.

so I was trying to add korean 10ax but I was waitlisted b/c I didn't fulfill the department requirements. I chose 10ax b/c in the course description for 1ax, it was for heritage speakrs who cannot write/read, and I can. not only that, even if I chose 1ax, it doesn't fit in my schedule.
anyway, I'm 13 on the waitlist and the current status is
Limit:22 Enrolled:0 Waitlist:10 Avail Seats:22 (but the waitlist might not be updated?)

I tried to contact the professor of this course but I couldn't find his/her email on the berkeley website.. so I ended up calling someone in the east asian department.

so my main question is, do I need to add another class to be safe, in case I don't get in?
or am I okay?
in case this matters i have 3 other courses (math seminar, math 54, cs3l = 9 units)
thanks in advance

I think this is the 10AX professor’s email:

minskim@berkeley…

found it on the Lecturer Directory at the Berkeley East Asian Languages website. I might be wrong about that, but I didn’t notice any other "KIM, M"s on that site…

For this class:

"Seats have been reserved for:

Instructor Approval; a Class Entry Code is required to enroll in these seats. (Open)
Students with a major of Chinese Language or Japanese Language (Open) "

Since (I’m assuming) you’re a freshman, you probably aren’t a declared Chinese or Japanese major. Thus, the only way to get into the class is to get the instructor approval, which you would probably be able to do during the first class. Basically, if you think the professor will let you in the class based on your language level (at around the same level of 10AX), you won’t need another class. But otherwise, I’d add another class to be safe.

By the way, is there a placement exam for Korean? If there is, and you took the exam, it should tell you what Korean class you should sign up for.

thanks cupola! i used that email to email the prof, still haven’t gotten a reply from her?him? yet.
abch123, yes i’m a freshman.haha okay thanks.
there’s no placement exam? well, at least not that I know of… if there was one, I would take it. would my SAT korean score have any impact on my placement of the class?

thanks for the replies!

i got bumped up to 11 on the wait list. no one’s enrolled into the class yet and and tehre’s 13 ppl waitlisted… 22 availabe seats haha. i hope i have a chance?

The waitlist for the class isn’t really a “waitlist.” It’s more of a thing that they use as a medium between being officially enrolled in the class and not being enrolled. As long as you are “advised” to take 10ax (i.e. know the material taught in 1ax and 1bx and not too much), then the prof will probably let you in. They just put people on the waitlist to begin with so that there’s no guarantee to get in for those people who don’t “belong” in 10ax. Your SAT score wouldn’t have an impact, though it is a good indication to yourself of what class you should take.
