I'm really interested in the Computer Science/Digital Art combined major at Northeastern, but as someone who hasn't really focused on art in school/extracurriculars, I'm worried about sending in a portfolio. I'm fairly sure I have a pretty good shot of getting into Northeastern if I indicate on my app that I'm planning to major in comp sci, and I would rather apply to comp sci and get in than apply to a combined major and not get in because of my...lacking art skills. A portfolio isn't required if you're applying for a combined major (I think?), but it's strongly recommended.

If I didn't indicate the combined major, would it still be possible for me to take animation classes as a comp sci major, or minor in digital art somehow?

There are some art classes that are restricted to art majors. However, I was able to get into one when there was space left after art majors signed up. If you take a minor, you would be eligible for the classes for the minor, of course. Here is some useful information about the digital art program, along with combined options and minors, that you might find useful: http://www.northeastern.edu/registrar/courses/cat1314-acad-am-artd.pdf
If you do not start out with the combined major, it may be possible to start out in CS and transfer into the combined program. I don’t know how possible/easy this would be. You might want to contact someone from admissions, and phrase it as “I am interested in digital art but planning to major in computer science. Would it be possible to move into the combined program if I find that that is a route I would like to take after I start?” or something like that. (Don’t make it sound like you are afraid of submitting a portfolio.)

Thank you so much for the answer! I think I will email someone from admissions.

I’d say don’t worry about it. My friend is CS/digital art and says he can’t draw. He’s in the program because he’s interested in graphics engines/computer rendering stuff. You can also switch majors from the one you applied. I changed from CS/game design to CS/interactive media before orientation even started. And yes, there is enough elective space to take an animation class, though I don’t know if there is enough for a minor.
