Question about Fafsa and financial aid

So to start off here is my situation: I’m a high school junior who is graduating early this year. I have already been accepted into the University of Kentucky. I live with my dad and he draws social security disability and that is his only income. When I am filling out the Fafsa here soon will there be a spot for that or do I just put that he has no taxable income? Also I’m curious about how much I will receive considering I don’t have that much help from home.

Tuition is about $5400 a semester
My dads girlfriend works at uk though so therefore I get half tuition since I’m her dependent
Housing is around $4300 as well a semester
Then of course I’ll need meal plan and books too.
Kentucky is my home state if that helps any.

Before you get ahead of yourself you need to verify that your dad’s girlfriend gets to claim you as a dependent and therefore you will qualify for half tuition.

Come back to us when you’ve had this fact-checked by the benefits department at UK. Then we can help you figure out the rest. But I don’t know any university which allows an employees boyfriends child to use the tuition credit. I’m not being mean or judgmental- just make sure you’ve verified this before you assume.

Yes we have looked into in and since we live in the same household and I am her dependent I do qualify for the program.
“Eligibility
In order to be eligible for the tuition and mandatory fee discount the family member must be a spouse/partner (as defined by University Senate Rules and Policy) or dependent child (to age 25) of a regular full-time employee. Documentation is required to establish relationship if not already provided for health, dental or vision plans (Please see below for documentation requirements). He/She must also be in good academic standing and admitted to the University of Kentucky and registered, for credit, in undergraduate-level classes.”
@blossom

UK has some sort of strange leniency for dependents:

Can you commute from home rather than live on campus if that’s not affordable?

@Madison85 I live about 30-35 mins from the school so it would be pretty inconvenient and I would much rather live on campus. Even though it is rather expensive.

You might want to make sure to get a job this summer so you can contribute to the cost.

Looks like room and board on campus adds at least $10 k.

If dad’s girlfriend lives in the same household, is her income required to be reported on FAFSA as well?

@mommdc no because they are not legally married.

So, does dad’s girlfriend commute to campus?

Does dad’s girlfriend drive to work everyday?

Run the Net Price Calculator on the website and see what aid you’d get. Sounds like you’ll get a 5700 Pell Grant, 5500 loan, maybe some work study, and 1/2 tuition.

What if your dad and the GF break up?

Your $0 income on the FAFSA will likely be a verification target. The school will justifiably want to know how you love and pay your bills on $0 income. So just be prepared to provide any information they require ASAP.

How long has your dad lived with this GF? Is there a common law recognition in your state?

I already told this and ran the NPC for him/her. Looks prob like
Pell 5775
state grant 3,600,
school grant 600
plus possibly some academic money depending on gpa and sat maybe couple thou.

Against tuition
11,000
r&b 10,500,
books 1,000’
pocket money 1,000.

So will get 10k - 12 k and if he gets tuition then needcosts. S/he said gets a one time grant 1,700 I think first year. So looks manageable , can take the subsidized portion of loan.

@yitcollege take yiour loan the first year, or at least the subsidized portion which you don’t pay interest on. Then next year move to cheaper off campus apartment share. Also look to see if you get a work/study award and take a 10 hour a week or so job.

you will get 10 to 13k. Your cost after tuition discount will be 17.5k. So you will need 4.5 to 7.5k. If you get that grant for graduating early you need 2.5 to 5.5 which you can cover from work/study and student loan.

Also if the girlfriend pays some of the bills does that have to be reported on the FAFSA?
