I'm considering taking Americans in Paris, does the class require the ability to speak French? I'm almost 99% sure it doesn't but it's listed under the French section in both the FYS booklet and the course schedules. also, anyone have any experience taking the class?

i am an incoming freshman so i obviously have never taken this class. however, i know for a fact that there is a fyws listed under spanish (same deal you described) that has to do with spanish speaking people and this seminar does NOT require knowledge of spanish. i would also guess that vandy wants freshman to have a large range of options when it comes to fyws and requiring that you know a language to take one would be very limiting. so i would say not likely. anyone else maybe taken the class?

I’m pretty sure the ability to speak French is not required. You could always try emailing the instructor.

No, French is not required. I am not sure if its the same teacher who is teaching it, (Mary Beth Raycraft), but she was my VUceptor and shes really nice, and I imagine she would be a very helpful teacher. If you want to know more about her I would definitely check ratemyprofessor…

But no you do not need French. I remember speaking to her about the FYS she was teaching

Is it possible to take more than one FYS? If space would permit, can you take one in the fall as well as the spring? I suspect that the answer is no even if space permits as this might be an easy way to get an additional AXLE course out of the way while fulfilling another writing course.

I think a girl in my FYS did that actually. You could ask this question when you have your academic advisor meeting at SAOP, or you could just call someone.

They don’t do SAOP anymore.
