I was wondering if it is an advantage or detriment to apply from a place say... the midwest where about 10% of a class is from?

if you're from a place where hardly anyone applies from, they're probably going to perk up a bit when they see your app, in the interest of diversity. but if you're not qualified, taking into account all the opportunities you have had as an individual, then it wont matter.
i would say people are accepted in similar proportions to those who apply. for instance, if 10% of the applicants are from the midwest, probably about 10% of the acceptees will be from the midwest. this, however, may be completely off.
