Let's say you get an 83 on a prelim and the mean for the prelim is a 69 with a standard deviation of 12. If the median grade for the class is a B, would 83 be an A or A-?

More than likely an A, although it depends on the professor/course.

like he said it depends on the course. for most science courses, ie orgo, it would probably be A for that exam. But don’t forget that people drop courses a lot!! and that would raise the mean of the exam so your grade would most likely go below 1 SD. I know for orgo a bunch of people had like <10 for grade/100, so they dropped the mean, but some of them dropped and the mean went up. its the final mean that they grade you on

how do you find out what the mean and the standard deviation is for a prelim and also the median grade for the class?

The mean and standard dev. for a prelim should be given to you by your professor/TA. However, it is at their discretion, so if they don’t want to tell you, that’s their prerogative.

The median grade for a course is given in the median grade reports [Cornell University Registrar: Median Grades](http://registrar.sas.cornell.edu/Student/mediangradesA.html)

How about this?

Say I got an 83 on a prelim, mean was 77% and a S.D. of 12%…what would that be…also the median grade of the class is a B-.

Bio 1101? 10char

the OP has got to be in orgo…impressive grade! :)

bio 101 isnt curved but it did have the same mean and standard deviation
