For graduation purpose, do those non-major electives have to be upper division classes or not?
Can they be taken as PNP?

depends on your major and college. For example, lets use an example of an IBM major in L&S.

The college requires at least 36 UD units and 6 of those must be outside of the major. Then, the major may specify electives to meet a certain number of units, two classes of which could be taken outside of the IB department (e.g. MCB, ESPM and others).

For non-major courses, P/NP is perfectly acceptable, although L&S allows you to take no more than 1/3 of all your units taken at Cal as P/NP. The out of department electives in the paragraph above are required for the major, as electives, thus would not be eligible for P/NP unless it was approved in advance by the IB department.

Those are examples of the rules, but one needs to very carefully scan the UC, Cal, college at Cal and then major department requirements and policies to merge into the rules that will guide your future class selections.

So are those non-major electives need to be upper division courses for L&S?
