Question about outside scholarships

Hi, I’m going to start as a freshman at Northeastern in the fall. I received a $5,000 a year “Special Scholarship” sponsored by my dad’s company through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The terms of the scholarship state that it is renewable for four years and you must remain as a student continuously.

Obviously Northeastern is different from most colleges in that it sometimes takes 5 years because students go on co-op instead of taking classes. I am worried that I might have to forfeit the scholarship or something once I go on co-op because I won’t be taking classes.

Does anyone have experience with this type of issue? Obviously I plan to talk to the financial aid office at Northeastern about this but I wanted to hear what kind of experiences people have had.

We’re still considered full-time students while on co-op; obviously, you’re not paying for tuition but it doesn’t count as a “semester off” or anything of the like, but I think technically we’re enrolled in “CO-OP”, which is pass/fail (passing = you didn’t get fired or do something absurd) and the only reason we do so is so that it appears in our degree audit as eligible to graduate as co-op is a requirement.

Basically, it shouldn’t be an issue of forfeiting the scholarship because we are full-time students even when on co-op. You would definitely get more information from contacting your scholarship provider though.

@pdubs97 are you a NM finalist?
