Question about Scheduling

For current Mudd students: as an incoming freshman this fall I don’t exactly know how scheduling works. While I know that my interests may change throughout college, I’m thinking that I may either major in Engineering or CS/Math. I do understand 1st years have similar schedule though due to the Core Curriculum.

If I major in either Engineering or CS/Math, how do HSA courses work? Ideally I’d like my HSA to be Econ, but I also really want to do a foreign language (preferably Chinese or Japanese). Is there a way to do a couple language courses (and eventually a study abroad) along with some Econ classes (and ultimately declare Econ as my HSA/Minor), or will I have to pick one and choose that as my HSA concentration?

Thanks.

You can probably do both, but a few things to think about:

  • Students sometimes have difficulty scheduling foreign language classes due to the constraints of core class timing, and sometimes major course timing as well. You won't know until you get to campus in the fall -- you register for classes after orientation/dropoff.
  • Most study abroad opportunities require a 3.0 GPA or above. There are Mudd students who can't/don't go abroad for GPA reasons. GPAs tend to be lower during core, and rise during jr/senior years. But it is late soph/early junior year when GPA is needed for programs.
