question about selection with LACs..

I heard something interesting about if you come from california, because a majority of people who apply OOS tend to apply to big name universities, the competition for LAC admission is lower than it should be. is this true? i'm looking into a loooot of LACs for my undergraduate years so this is significant news for me.

thanks!

it might be. it really depends on which LACs/the kids in your school. u should be able to find ‘well-represented states’ on college websites.

I suppose that depends on the school. At the high school I attend, Pomona, for example, is very much popular with about 20 or so applications a year, while schools like Amherst, Williams, and Swarthmore receive perhaps on average 4 applications a year. The east coast LACs are undoubtedly weaker in name recognition here, so it would certainly be advantageous to apply to such schools if that were what you were looking for.

Hmm let’s just assume its a relatively big (2400 student big?) high school in a competitive area of california. from what I can tell, very few people are aware of LACs (a majority didn’t even recognize pomona) but then again in a high school where 600 people are in each grade you never know ahaha.

I thought most East Coast LACs got a great volume of applications from the East Coast (obviously, lol) and California…
