My daughter is getting ready for the admissions season this fall. She is working on her art portfolio for a performing arts school (the school FAME was based on and this is our backup plan since boarding school is her preference).

Should she bring her portfolio to her BS admission interviews?

Thx!

It’s probably a good idea, particularly if you’re looking at schools strong in the arts, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask when you call to set up the interview. At some schools (like my kids’ school, Concord), they will try to set up a meeting with a faculty member in a department of the student’s interest, if you let them know ahead of time. If you set up a meeting with an art teacher, you’d definitely want to bring it.

Thanks photodad! I had no idea the interview could be with a faculty member from her areas of interest.

It’s not the interview. You still do that with an AO. But many schools will try to make faculty or coaches in your child’s area of interest available if you pre notify them. We had similar experiences at more than one school, it certainly made me think more highly of those schools than the ones that just put you through the standard tour and process.

Thank you, PelicanDad!

Oops, caveat: at smaller schools, an admissions officer may well wear multiple hats, and may be the AP US History teacher or the field hockey coach. Everyone as boarding schools wears multiple hats, even more so at the smaller ones.

@NYCMomof3: I spent my freshman year @ the Fame school – this was way back in the olden days, when it was called High School for Performing Arts. It was an intense and magical place! Your post brought back memories of my audition/interview day. Best of luck to your daughter!

cameo43…the school changed its name to LaGuardia. I hear nice things about the school but the school won’t let us tour. They only allow tours after being accepted I’m just worried about class size…my daughter is coming from a class size of 12 (24 total in her 7th grade).

I wanted to go to LaGuardia so badly in seventh grade (parents were worried about location, though) When I was applying to other private high schools, I was allowed to hand in my portfolio at the interviews.

Good luck! :)

P.S. That is ridiculously small class size. I’m envious-my classes are around 25 students or more, all jammed into one room. There were at least 250 students in the whole grade!

GoldenRatio thanks so much for the info! Yes her class is small…she’s in a small private school…maybe 350-400 students in total between preschool 2s thru 8th grade.
