Hate to be the person who registers just to ask a question, but i really can't find any topic that can really answer my question.
I'm a freshman in fall, 2011 to UCR and my major is, as mentioned in the title, Pre-Business and I'm planning to change to Business Admin.. My problem is that one of the requirements is that the student must apply to Business Admin. by the time 90 units have been completed and I have already completed 40 units by taking AP exam in high school. After taking out all the required courses that my AP exam took care of, I still have 16 courses that i still need to complete. Unless all those courses are only 3 units each, I'm going to exceed the 90 units requirement before I can complete the required courses.
All right , here is the question... Am I doomed... is there any way that I can avoid to be disqualified for over-achieving in high school... :(

Thanks for reading the post and feel free to post anything that comes to mind

i believe it is actually 100 units. 90 is recommended, but 100 is the cap if i remember correctly. if i remember correctly, exceptions can also be made. you should try to talk to your academic adviser as soon as possible, and also talk to him/her again when it is time to apply to SoBA. They obviously should make an exception for you. good luck!

Thanks for replying. On the hand out that I got from the orientation, it says 90 units, so does the UCR website. Maybe they changed it recently. I guess I have to talk to the adviser. Keeping my fingers crossed.

The way AP units factor into things is a bit different. I’m not sure exactly how it works for pre-business and I can’t remember the terminology but let me use graduation for an example. You need a minimum of 180 units to graduate and you can’t go over a certain amount (off the top of my head I want to say 216 but I’m probably wrong.) So let’s so you have your 40 ap units and 150 units earned at UCR. Assuming you took all the classes required, you could then graduate since you have 190 units. Not let’s say you have 40 AP units but 180 units at UCR. You might think there would be a problem since it pushes you over the 216 unit cap, but AP units do not count towards the unit cap. Here’s what my advisor said from an email I sent a little while back:

“The units you earned as a result of your AP test scores do count toward the 180 units you need to graduate. We do not consider them for the 216 maximum amount of units you can earn toward your degree.”

Overall I think you should talk to your advisor about when to apply for business administration, though I don’t think you should be that concerned. I’m more than certain that they have had many students who have come in with AP credits and with a similar situation.

im not sure which site you’re looking at, but this is what i found. [Undergraduate Business Program: Pre-Business Students Applying for the Major](<a href=“Business Administration Major | School of Business”>Business Administration Major | School of Business)

id like to know which site you were looking at though to verify. =]

thanks for all the replies. Hmm… I got it off
[UCR: CHASS Student Academic Affairs](http://chassstudentaffairs.ucr.edu/pre-business_program/)
It’s in the middle of the page with an underlined 90

oh okay. ahhhhh ucr really needs to update all their websites! that page also said “Effective Fall 2000 cumulative GPA is 2.5.” right after it says 90 units, so im hoping 100/110 units is the current rule. =/
