question about the sat please help!!!!!

k so i took the sat junior year and got 2140 (800 w, 740 cr, 600 m), then i retook it november after studying my butt off for the math and studying more for the cr but guess what? i got wayyy lower score: 2010 (750 w, same 740 cr, and...520 m). i know cornell superscores so my november score will pretty much be ignored, but they still will see it, so could it affect my admission? or do they truly only consider the highest score? i know 2140 is low for cornell anyway but i thought i had SOME chance...:(

Well, i dont know if you would want my informations, because, i’m a freshman in High School, but i have done my research, and it seems that 2140 is in range of the accepted applicants at Cornell. The problem i see with your sat scores is Mathematics, because i have seen it a vast number of times that Cornell doesn’t use the writing scores. So it would be out of 1600 (Math+Cr),that still does not mean that they completely disregard it howerer. On an important note however, as u have probably heard before, it is not all about scores. Cornell, is all about “fit”, and you would need to display that in your essays, and ECs (and an interview if you have 1). Good Luck and I hope you get in  Also, if you have any advantages such as: 1) Being a URM 2) Being a Legacy 3) Being a 1st Generation etc then you would have an even better shot, and if you dont have any “hooks” as some people would call it, then dont count yourself out yet. Just relax until December 10, or, if you are planning to retake the SATs then focus and study. Also, if you find that you are having problems with the SAT, remember that there is also the ACT. Most people who find themselves having problems with the SAT’s usually opt for the ACT, in which you can do much better. I have seen ppl with worst scores on the SAT than yours who have achieved a composite score of 31+ out of 35 . So, what im getting at is that, you do have options if you find out one thing isn’t working out too well for you. So, no matter what, just do your best. Also, do NOT take the SAT’s more than 3 times, colleges look down on that and think that you focus too much on grades. And, IF you get deferred i would recommend trying the ACT option, it would probably do you well. One again, Good Luck!!!

P.S. You can really bring up your score in Math by just going to collegeboard(dot)com . They have all the formulae that you would need for the Mathematics segment of the SATs. So, if you went and memorized them then you should be able to raise your math score if you’re going to take the exam a 3rd time, some ppl have even raised their score by 100+ points from studying the formulae that would be on the exam.

Keep in mind Cornell doesn’t look at writing scores so you’re looking at your score out of 1600, which isn’t that high at all.

thanks a lot, go4cornell! however, i don’t think i’m going to take the sat a 3rd time. i already studied this time around for the math but it made things worse somehow! :frowning: i studied the math for like three weeks every day for hours and look where it got me…a way lower score. :-/ i already took the act and did horrible (26). and i don’t think i have the money/time to get a sat math tutor. i guess it’s just kinda hopeless then??

edit: although…going on the website, it says:

SAT Scores 25th percentile for math is 670…so i guess it means there ARE people with lower that get in?

and since my cr score is ABOVE the 75th percentile…maybe i do have a chance???

and also: Percent of entering freshmen with the following SAT:
Score Range SAT Critical Reading SAT Math
700-800 41% 64%
600-699 45% 29%

so maybe???

also do they look at the writing AT ALL? cuz i’ve heard that some schools who don’t really “consider” it still look at it and it can help??

Please, don’t pay attention to the horrible grammar in my first sentence :frowning: I can’t seem to find the edit key lol and Glad to know i could help whitecadillac :)

They said they don’t ‘consider’ it. Take from that what you will.
They do see the score, but I don’t think it will have any impact unless you scored amazingly low (ie. 500-) that could say something bad. I don’t think the 800 will help your cause though, if that what you mean.

If I were you, I’d take it a third time. Your math scores are low (and to answer your question, yes, people with lower math scores do get in, but it’s a verry low percent for 600). Also, remember what school you are applying to as well as the fact that this is an SAT chart for all schools. HE or ALS (just as examples, not to be taken as truth) might have the lowest end of math scores, while A & S and Engineering will have the highest (this is tru fax) and a 600 might be lower than everyone else accepted.

yeah but like i said, i don’t have the time/money for a math tutor or anything, so…oh, well, i guess. i’ll apply and hope for the best. :(
