Question about Tone of a Scholarship

There is a small scholarship that my school offers. It is judged by a community of parents that are trying to understand the individual within an essay.

My question is: Should I make the tone of the essay a little lighter?

And at the end, I wrote "Thank you for your time." Is that appropriate?
And I also ended with "Sincerely, My name" <--ha, I actually almost wrote it

Anyways, since it is for a smaller community, and not a national one, is the tone allowed to steer away from formal?

I think that is perfectly appropriate.

Hmmm...maybe consider an ending something like "your comments and questions are invited and encouraged; I look forward to learning your decision".

I wouldn't steer away from formal. Even if small, and local, they may interpret less formal as less serious or less desirous (sp?) of the scholarship.

^^

That's a good suggestion, thanks.
