Question about transfer, please help!!!!

I know I'm not a MT but I was told people on this site might be able to help...

I'm a first year acting major at DePaul and I absolutly love it. The program here is amazing and I really hope that I make the cut (from 52 to 26). I do, however want to be prepared in case I don't. I was wondering what schools I should look into applying to again for next year and what factors they will look into.

I really don't know how they will judge my academic records because I only have 2 class that get grades that aren't "R". Will they take my high school grades (3.8, 27)? Also does anyone know how credits transfer because at the end of the year I will have 66 credits here.

One last thing, how should I handle the auditions? Should I tell the other schools that I love the one I'm at and that I will only transfer if I get cut...will they even want me if I get cut here?

I don't want to loose a year doing nothing and from the time I have been here I know that acting is what I want to do forever, nothing else. I love it and would appreciate any advice that I can get...Thanks!!!

Wow, that's a lot of questions in one! I'd strongly recommend talking to your advisor. He/She will know tons about credits that are likely to transfer or not, and should also be familiar with schools that cut theatre students at DePaul tend to gravitate towards when they inevitably transfer. I'm assuming that you have an advisor that specializes in theatre... this is the norm in colleges. If so, that person is a great great resource.

Another resource is college websites. It can be really tough digging through those sights, but it will tell you loads- especially when you look at the curriculums at different schools, which can be a great first step in deciding if a school fits you or not.

I know I didn't provide any specific answers, but you asked pretty much anything possible when it comes to transferring. I have transferred before, and will be again for next year, so I'm pretty familiar with the process. PM me if you have any specific questions in mind.. I could write a book on the post you just wrote!

To repeat myself, I'd run, not walk, to your advising center as soon as possible.

I also have a question. I was cut from the University of Arizona's BFA MT program, and I am awfully afraid that the colleges I'm auditioning at as a transfer are going to hold that against me. It's feasible that they would ask me why I left the U of A, and I would have to tell them the truth, of course. What is the right thing to say if they ask why I was cut? The reason is quite complicated, but it's my opinion that it was more about having a castable company than about my talent or work ethic. I received so many compliments from the faculty on my performances and dedication in the semester before I was cut, so that just doesn't make sense. I believe they already had my type in the company, and perhaps because I wasn't a superstar in Chekhov class, they felt they had no choice but to cut me. But how do I explain that to another MT program without sounding like I'm making excuses or feeling bitter about it? I would love to avoid the whole issue if possible, but I need to be prepared in case they ask. Could I just say, "The program was not a good match for me" or am I ethically obliged to tell them I was cut?

Any input on this would be SO appreciated.

Not quite sure how you would answer that, but I wouldn't lie. Even if only to say the program wasn't a good match. If you get in, then you'll be sitting on a lie for the rest of your college career and that in itself isn't worth it.
I don't see the harm is saying that you were cut. The judges are going to see the talent you have to offer.. regardless of whether you were cut somewhere else or left, and for what reasons. The bottom line is that they are looking at talent, the "it factor" and your drive. Show them the passion you have, and do your best. That'll say more about you than any excuse as to why you were cut.

First of all, hugs to ckp and samia. I feel so badly for kids who end up in your positions. Samia, if you are asked why you're leaving UA, tell the truth. The theatre world, even at the college level, is a small one and chances are someone at the colleges you're applying to will know someone at UA and could easily find out the real reason. The truth is always best. Auditors know which programs have these cut policies so it won't be any big surprise to them. Keep your explanation as simple and honest as possible, then wow them with your talent.

ckp, your situation is a little more complex. When will you know if you've been cut? If it's not prior to when you'd have to audition for transfer, this puts you in a very difficult position. If auditors find that you're only auditioning 'just in case', that may put you at a possible disadvantage. It's a tough spot. There was discussion with a student either last year or the year before who was cut, I believe at CCM. Unfortunately, I don't recall her username so couldn't search for the thread. She was in a terrible situation because by the time she heard, it was too late to apply/audition for the following fall at most schools, and she did not complete her year so she wasn't a real candidate for transfer credit either. What a sad situation for a student to be in.

Where else did you apply/audition last year? Did you get any other offers of admission? Perhaps that would be the place to start thinking about applying for transfer. As for the credits, that varies school to school and usually you won't get confirmation of transfer credit until you are admitted and can speak with an advisor.

I'm sorry when kids end up having to deal with these situations when they're still in the training and education stage of their lives. They'll have enough to worry about in the profession when they're auditioning for jobs. Once they're admitted to a college program, unless they are struggling academically or not attending classes, they should be nurtured and trained in their program as anticipated. I sure hope those of you who have kids who are in the admissions process this year seriously consider whether or not you want them in a school which plans all along to cut 50% of the freshman class.

Listen to AlwaysAMom, as that was a great post!

Haha it's actually worse than that...I got cut after the SOPHOMORE year. 75 credits of nothing but singing, dancing and acting. Can't even start another major without being a freshman again, and I doubt any MT program (including the U of Arizona's) will let me start as anything higher than a sophomore...

Except for CSU Fullerton. :) I like them for that whole accepting transfers as juniors thing. 75 credits! 75!!!

BLAST!

;) I'll show 'em. :)

Thanks everyone for your advice, and to samia525 I'm sso sorry about being cut after sophomore year and I am glade that DePaul changed the system to only cuts after frosh.

I would have too audition in Feb. and I will not find out if I am cut until June...in fact I would find out whether or not I got into the new schools before I found out if I got cut! I just don't know how to go about it because I want to be safe (50% is a tough one) but I don't want my school to get upset with it, or the other schools to look down on me because of it and if I wait until next year that is an entire year off...Thanks again for all of your suggestions!
