so they said I recieved $14,000ish in grants from Davis, but I also have recieved a bunch of outside scholarships recently, will they reduce my grant amount because of the scholarships? or is that number permanent. And what happens if I receive scholarships over the cost of attendance? that includes books and everything.

If these are need based grants, then it’s likely they will be reduced since your need is less than anticipated. Check with the FA office on what their policy is - at my D’s school, their policy is that outside scholarships first reduce unmet need (gap), then loans, then work study, and then grants.

If your outside scholarships exceed the cost of attendance, or actually just the amount the school actually bills for, you will receive a refund of the unused portion. Remember to save some for taxes as any amounts in excess of tuition and required fees/course materials is going to be taxable income.

You may be able to petition for an increase in the COA- a computer purchase, actual travel expenses, etc. may qualify. Look at the UCD website for specifics as to what they allow.

Your self help aid (loans & WS) should be reduced before grants, but watch carefully, I know people who had grants reduced and when they called to ask, it was corrected to not reduce grants, but loans offered, so mistakes can be made.
